208A CHRONICLE OF THE ENGINEERING COUNCILin promoting beneficial change, best practice, quality and competitiveness in <strong>the</strong> UnitedKingdom.Article 6(Promotion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession)(1) In collaboration with o<strong>the</strong>r United Kingdom bodies and Government supported initiatives,<strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> shall promote <strong>the</strong> wider recognition by <strong>the</strong> public <strong>of</strong> engineering as adesirable preferred career option. The <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>, working in collaboration wi<strong>the</strong>mployers and o<strong>the</strong>r organisations, shall encourage <strong>the</strong> most able people to pursue careers inengineering and to retain <strong>the</strong>m.(2) The <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> shall work with o<strong>the</strong>rs to raise <strong>the</strong> standing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>eringPr<strong>of</strong>ession with employers, top management, <strong>the</strong> City, opinion <strong>for</strong>mers, <strong>the</strong> media and <strong>the</strong>wider public.Article 7(Encouraging participation)(1) The <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> shall encourage especially all levels <strong>of</strong> academia, industry,management and individuals, particularly young engineers, technicians, UK industry andmanagement to participate actively in <strong>the</strong> better development and use <strong>of</strong> engineering skills toimprove United Kingdom competitiveness. It shall seek to demonstrate that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>eringInstitutions are <strong>of</strong> conspicuous value to engineers and technicians at all stages <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir careersand to <strong>the</strong> success <strong>of</strong> businesses. It shall encourage and assist individuals to assumeresponsibility <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own continuing pr<strong>of</strong>essional development and put in place aframework <strong>for</strong> pursuing lifelong learning.Article 8(Promotion <strong>of</strong> United Kingdom pr<strong>of</strong>essional quahfications overseas)(1) In collaboration with o<strong>the</strong>r engineering bodies <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> shall promote <strong>the</strong>wider recognition <strong>of</strong> United Kingdom engineering occupational standards and pr<strong>of</strong>essionalqualifications in countries overseas with a view to giving United Kingdom firms acompetitive edge in international markets.Article 9(Duration <strong>of</strong> MOU)(1) This Memorandum comes into effect on <strong>the</strong> date <strong>of</strong> signing and remains in being unlessamended by agreement or terminated by ei<strong>the</strong>r party following consultation with <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rafter giving notice <strong>of</strong> such intention at least one month prior to commencement <strong>of</strong>consultations.Ian LangPresident <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trade(on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United KingdomGovernment)Alan Rudge CBEChairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Senate(on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong>)Tuesday 25 March 1997© <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> UK 2004
