About <strong>the</strong> AuthorsColin R ChapmanColin Chapman spent 35 years in <strong>the</strong> Electricity Supply Industry. He worked in fossilfiredand nuclear power plants initially as a Chemist and <strong>the</strong>n in <strong>Engine</strong>ering in <strong>the</strong>UK and overseas. He ultimately became responsible <strong>for</strong> training policy <strong>for</strong> NuclearElectric plc.He founded <strong>the</strong> South West Branch <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institution <strong>of</strong> Nuclear <strong>Engine</strong>ers and <strong>for</strong>several years was Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Energy’s Membership Committee. Hejoined <strong>the</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> staff in 1997 on a part-time basis where he continuesto manage a team <strong>of</strong> some 70 volunteer engineers.He spends <strong>the</strong> remainder <strong>of</strong> his time advising <strong>the</strong> United Nations, lecturing <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>Chemical Industries Association, and acting as a tutor <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Open University. He is aFellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Society <strong>of</strong> Genealogists and has written 14 books on British SocialHistory; on which he also lectures world-wide.He is a Chartered Chemist and a Chartered <strong>Engine</strong>er, a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Society <strong>of</strong>Chemistry, <strong>the</strong> Royal Society <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Promotion <strong>of</strong> Health, <strong>the</strong> Energy Institute and<strong>the</strong> Institution <strong>of</strong> Nuclear <strong>Engine</strong>ers.He is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Courts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Bristol and <strong>of</strong> University CollegeNorthampton, and is an Honorary Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter.Pr<strong>of</strong>essor J.C. (Jack) LevyJack Levy received his engineering education at Imperial College and in <strong>the</strong> USA. Hespent several years in <strong>the</strong> aircraft design industry be<strong>for</strong>e joining <strong>the</strong> City University,London where he became Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and Head <strong>of</strong> Mechanical and Manufacturing<strong>Engine</strong>ering. From 1978 to 82 he was Pro Vice-chancellor. Also, from 1963 to 1983he was a consultant to Shell International Marine on ship structures.In 1983 he joined <strong>the</strong> recently <strong>for</strong>med <strong>Engine</strong>ering <strong>Council</strong> as Director - <strong>Engine</strong>eringPr<strong>of</strong>ession, carrying executive responsibility <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> nationalEducation and Training standards <strong>for</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional engineers. Also <strong>for</strong> internationalcontacts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession. He returned in 1997 to lead <strong>the</strong> preparation <strong>of</strong> a newedition <strong>of</strong> SARTOR.He now runs Levytator Ltd <strong>for</strong>med to exploit advances in escalator technology.He is a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering, <strong>the</strong> Institution <strong>of</strong> Mechanical<strong>Engine</strong>ers, <strong>the</strong> Royal Aeronautical Society and <strong>the</strong> Irish Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering.In 1984 he was awarded <strong>the</strong> OBE and in 1999 a Gold medal from <strong>the</strong> WorldFederation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Engine</strong>ering Organisations (WFEO). He holds Honorary Doctoratesfrom four UK Universities.
