effective environmental management. (Refer to EP 4.4.1-1.)<br />

MDT’s top management has appointed the Manager of Safety and <strong>Environmental</strong><br />

Protection to have defined roles, responsibilities and authority for:<br />

(a) ensuring that an <strong>Environmental</strong> <strong>Management</strong> <strong>System</strong> is established,<br />

implemented and maintained in accordance with the requirements of this<br />

International Standard; and<br />

(b) reporting to top management on the performance of the <strong>Environmental</strong><br />

<strong>Management</strong> <strong>System</strong>, including recommendations for improvement.<br />

Refer to Attachment E for a copy of MDT’s Resources, Roles, Responsibility,<br />

and Authority Procedure and Matrix.<br />

4.4.2.Competence, training and awareness<br />

MDT has evaluated the people performing tasks for it or on its behalf who have<br />

the potential to cause significant environmental impacts. These people are<br />

competent on the basis of appropriate education, training or experience. MDT<br />

retains associated records primarily in the Training department’s database. Where<br />

appropriate, some training documents may be maintained in the local area where<br />

the employee works or in the Human Resources department.<br />

MDT has identified training needs associated with its environmental aspects and<br />

its environmental management system. MDT provides training or takes other<br />

action to meet these needs, and retains associated records. MDT has established,<br />

implemented and maintains procedures (refer to EP 4.4.2-1) to make people<br />

working for it or on its behalf aware of:<br />

(a) the importance of conformity with the environmental policy and procedures<br />

and with the requirements of the environmental management system;<br />
