Finally, you can store selections (i.e., just the marqueed region and per-pixel<br />

selectedness data) as part of either the current image or any open image file, and<br />

load a stored selection at any time. It's often useful to be able to "grab" the same<br />

region of an image at different phases of working on it. And, for repetitive tasks<br />

(preparing Web buttons, for example) on different but graphically similar files, by<br />

storing a selection you can reuse it rather than having to recreate it for each file.<br />

Both Store Selection... and Load Selection... options are hosted on the right-click<br />

pop-up menu or Select menu (you can also delete any stored selection).<br />

Modifying a selection<br />

Once you've used a selection tool to select a region on the active layer, you can<br />

carry out a number of additional steps to fine-tune the selection before you actually<br />

apply an effect or manipulation to the selected pixels. Paint to Select mode even<br />

lets you use standard painting or editing tools as selection tools!<br />

Moving the selection marquee<br />

Sometimes, for example with a text selection, you need to adjust the position<br />

of the marquee without affecting the underlying pixels. Any time you're using one<br />

of the selection tools, the cursor over a selected region changes to the Move<br />

Marquee cursor, which lets you drag the marquee outline to reposition it.<br />

You can also use the keyboard arrows to "nudge" the selection marquee. In this<br />

case you’re only moving the selection outline—not the image content inside it. You<br />

use the Move Tool to drag the selection plus its image content.<br />

Transforming the selection<br />

The Selection Deform Tool on the Tools toolbar's Deform Tools flyout lets<br />

you transform, scale or rotate any already drawn selection area. With the tool<br />

enabled, square nodes on the mid-points and corners of any selected area can be<br />

dragged—look for the cursor changing between resize and rotate modes when<br />

hovering over a corner node. Use in conjunction with the Ctrl key to transform the<br />

selection area without constraint, creating a skewed transform (drag nodes as<br />

appropriate). The Alt key resizes the area about its centre, while the Shift key<br />

maintains the area’s aspect ratio. It’s also possible to move the small centre of
