VISITOR MOSCOW ВОПРОСЫ ПОЛА NOW I’M HERE Из всех классиков западного поп-рок-мейнстрима до России Пол Маккартни добрался позже всех. Paul McCartney was one of the last of the classic performers of mainstream Western pop-rock to make it to Russia. Russians have always adored this Beatle, and the fact that he is also not indifferent to us was good news to Alеxandеr Bеlyaеv. 20 WHERE MOSCOW I DECEMBER 2011
It’s hard to believe that he used to wear leather jackets, either a usual or a biker one McCartney never lets his ladies alone — all of his wives travel with him. Now the musician visits Moscow as a newlywed, for the first time This will be Paul McCartney’s third time in Russia, his second time in Moscow and his first concert in an indoor arena. Yes, he and his group have already performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and he himself has previously met the higher echelons of Russian society. We have already seen all the star names and have become used to all that, but the ex-Beatle’s concert is, for some reason, a special event. Again there will be a great hullabaloo, a packed house and none of the accreditations that we journalists like so much. What for, you may ask? Just another big concert by an ageless Western star. No, there is something personal here: Russians loved The Beatles so much (not to mention Wings and McCartney’s various solo projects) and for so long had no hope of seeing any of them live that this feeling, like an uncoiled spring, is still reverberating. McCartney also had questions for this country concerning pirate versions of recordings from his catalogue released on vinyl in the troubled 1990s. When he was finally shown the records “on ribs” or “on bones” — the primitive discs on X-rays produced by fans in Khrushchev’s time, he was so pleasantly surprised that he forgot all about piracy. Today, of course, it is difficult to class Paul McCartney among those at the cutting edge of popular music. Sales of new albums are fairly sluggish, probably rather by inertia. For his own amusement he composes orchestral, instrumental and electronic music (the Fireman project). His new album, Ocean’s Kingdom, is another “serious” work, McCartney’s first attempt at ballet. There is actually nothing odd about this: McCartney was never a stranger to classical music (remember George Martin’s luscious orchestration in “Penny Lane” and the strange quasi-avant-garde “Revolution No. 9”). But whatever he does, his tours are invariably on a grand scale and play to packed houses. Everything is the best of the best: the musicians (fellow-performers of long standing), the sound, the videos, the show, the million instruments. In non-English-speaking countries he even attempts to read some kind words in the local language from a piece of paper (listening to McCartney trying to speak Ukrainian is a pleasure in itself!) or enlists the aid of an interpreter. All in all, a Paul McCartney concert is not simply a selection of old hits, though even that would be enough. Fortunately, the 69-yearold veteran and newlywed is still full of real rock ’n’ roll energy, which he conveys to everybody — without exception.
