поджидают два поэта, мимо которых в прямом смысле
невозможно пройти. Первый памятник — Иосифу
Бродскому на Новинском бульваре. Почему именно
там? Ответ прост: многофигурная композиция Георгия
Франгуляна стоит напротив американского посольства.
Впрочем, бронзовый Бродский демонстративно
задрал голову в небо: его, гражданина мира,
собеседника Джона Донна и нобелевского лауреата,
посольства уже не очень интересуют.
А вот другой знаменитый поэт на Садовом кольце,
наоборот, смотрит прямо перед собой. Огромный
Маяковский работы Кибальникова с 1958 года
украшает площадь на пересечении Садового кольца
с Тверской улицей. Поэты-шестидесятники читали
у подножья монумента стихи. В 2009—2010-м
годах Маяковский вдруг снова оказался вовлечен
в политику: у его ног происходили стычки милиции
с активистами «Стратегии-31». Как, интересно,
отнесся бы он к этому, будь живым, а не бронзовым?..
От Триумфальной площади можно поймать машину
и за десять минут доехать до площади Борьбы.

Gogolevsky Boulevard leads to the Prechistensky
Gates, and there, if we turn right and walk along
Ostozhenka (or take a trolley), we come out on
to the Garden Ring. Here two poets await us, and
it is literally impossible to pass by them. The first
is the monument to Joseph Brodsky in Novinsky
Boulevard. Why there? The answer is simple: Georgy
Frangulian’s multi-figure composition stands opposite
the American Embassy. However, the bronze Brodsky
has demonstratively raised his head skywards:
embassies no longer particularly interest him, a citizen
of the world, an interlocutor of John Donne, and
a Nobel Prize winner.
The other famous poet in the Garden Ring, on
the contrary, looks straight ahead. Kibalnikov’s huge
statue of Vladimir Mayakovsky has graced the square
at the intersection of the Garden Ring and Tverskaya
Street since 1958. Poets of the sixties read their verses
at the foot of the monument. Mayakovsky found himself
drawn into politics again at the end of the first decade
of the 21st century: the clashes between the police and
“Strategy 31” activists took place at his feet. I wonder
how he would feel about it if he were alive and not just
a bronze statue?..
