DESTINATION MOSCOW
Frost
and Sun
By Maria Bakharеva
For two years running winter has brought
Muscovites lots of snow, bright sunshine and
noses pinched by frost — the perfect conditions
for enjoying seasonal pursuits!
We will follow Pushkin’s
advice by not sleeping
through these sunny,
frosty days, and we
recommend that
everybody follows
our example. All the more so as Moscow
traditionally offers winter entertainment
for all tastes — from cultural visits
to academic (and not so academic)
MORE THAN
ICE RINKS
IN MOSCOW
establishments to healthy outdoor
recreation. We have compiled a short but
informative guide to the entertainment
available in the capital this winter.
SKATING
For several years now the principal
venue for ice skating enthusiasts has
been the GUM Rink in Red Square. This
year it will face serious competition;
2
it is planned to install the biggest ice rink
in Europe in the renovated Gorky Park.
The 4,000 square meter arena will include
several separate sections — a children’s
area and rinks for ice hockey and ice
dancing. Like the rink in Red Square, it will
operate in all weathers from December
to March, regardless of possible thaws.
SKIING
An abundance of snow, which delights
children and annoys local services,
combined with the appointment of a native
of the Urals as the city’s mayor, has led
to the revival of the fashion for crosscountry
skiing. This year tracks will be laid
in the Neskuchny Garden, Izmailovsky
Park, on Vorobyovy Hills, at Kuzminki,
at Pokrovskoye-Streshnevo — in fact,
in almost all the city’s parks. The most
interesting track will be in the Aleshkinsky
Forest at Tushino — it will be equipped
to professional skiing standards and will
operate in all weathers.
SLED DOG RACING
Not the most traditional pastime for
the capital, but this winter Muscovites
and visitors to the city can try their hand
at driving a team of real Eskimo dogs
in Gorky Park.
You can see in the New Year in the country’s
principal square — this year’s event will
be organized with no false modesty, but in
a genuinely festive way: with champagne,
fireworks and a concert of popular music
through till morning. Those who prefer to
celebrate not in a big crowd but in a more
decorous family atmosphere can head for
Poklonnaya Hill, where the chimes and
fireworks will be replaced by a real artillery
salute, while the teenage generation can ride
on a reindeer-drawn sleigh around a gigantic
Christmas tree.
