foyer before the show visitors can take part
in a New Year circus carnival, with free ice
cream and plenty of surprises. There will be
entertainment of many different kinds: pony
rides, a kingdom of distorting mirrors and
aqua-make-up. The circus also has a clown
museum with over 5,000 exhibits from
various ages from all over the world.
Bazillium is more than just a circus.
It is a circus-theater: every show is
not simply a collection of circus acts
and stunts, but a full-value theatrical
production in a wide variety of genres —
a theater of clowning, a theater of mime,
a fire show, a variety show and much
more. An interesting feature of this circus
is that it has two stages, one of them in
the very middle of the auditorium. And the
auditorium is quite small, so all members
of the audience feel as though they are
part of the show. The circus’s New Year
program runs from December 25 to
January 15. An hour and a half before the
show and twenty minutes after it there will
be a parade in the foyer, the participants
being the circus artists and all the visitors,
both young and old — competitions,
tricks, prizes, presents, refreshments and
a chance to mingle with the artists, who
include the trained dogs and multicolored
parrots that are so popular with audiences.
Another step into the fairytale world is
provided by a shop selling amazing toys.
It is not only the circus’s concept that is
unique, but also its construction. Despite
the fact that it is a mobile circus that
can be dismantled and reassembled in a
few weeks, it is very cozy inside: velvet,
natural wood, stained glass and a wealth of
mirrors that make the space appear larger.
In all the details one can sense the skilful
hand of the idea’s originator — Cirque du
Soleil artist Vasily Demenchukov. Canada’s
most famous circus is also appearing
in Moscow: its show Saltimbanco quite
recently enjoyed a triumph at Luzhniki,
and from the beginning of February the
You can see a classic circus show at
the Allez-Moscow Traveling Circus. It has
been in existence for around 15 years and
tours Russia with invariable success. The
circus’s main pride is its equestrian show.
The training is above all praise. Besides the
shows featuring horses (Freedom of Horses
and Gypsy Girl), there are performances
by other trained animals (beasts of prey,
dogs and monkeys), trapeze artists and, of
course, clowns.
And the very young will undoubtedly
enjoy Durov Animal Theater, which
also has a rich history: Vladimir Durov, a
famous circus artist and animal trainer and
the first Honored Circus Artist of Russia,
opened it in January 1912, so the theater
will very soon be celebrating its centenary.
It is, of course, not so much a circus as a
theater, but an unusual theater: its artists
are animals and birds. From December
10 on the Large Stage the artists will be
performing The Queen’s New Year Caprice,
featuring a fox, a deer, bears, wolves, a
sea lion, an elephant and numerous other
animals.
Whichever show you choose, you are
guaranteed an excellent mood, even if does
not last for the whole year!
