The correct size of the action range depends on many factors and it is
therefore impossible to establish general rules. In many cases, the
default size of 10% for all color separations is appropriate.
It is usually not advisable to use action range sizes of more than 30%.
This usually leads to many unwanted color changes resulting in sharp
transitions which would make your color correction table useless.
If you have already achieved a very good color match (e.g. after several
iterations of printing, measuring and optimizing), you should be even
more careful. Very small action ranges (lower than 10%) are usually
appropriate in this case.
Action Range Visualization
The action range size can be represented graphically if you have loaded
a measurement file.
Click the 3D VIEW button in the COLOR VALUE CORRECTION dialog (see
Fig. 18-5) to get a 3-dimensional representation of the Lab measurement
values. If you enable the ACTION RANGE ONLY, SHOW WEIGHTING and
PROOF EDGES options, the currently selected color is displayed along
with the similar colors located within the current action range.
