Para alivio <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>sgracias iSea! : <strong>de</strong> lo que yo no quiero Aliviarme es <strong>de</strong>l sincero Deber <strong>de</strong> darle las gracias. 2 JOSÉ MARTÍ Quien ha escrito esta noveluca, jamás había escrito otra antes, lo que <strong>de</strong> sobra conocerá el lector sin necesidad <strong>de</strong> este proemio, ni escribirá probablemente otra <strong>de</strong>spués. En una hora <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>socupación, le tentó una oferta <strong>de</strong> esta clase <strong>de</strong> trabajo: y como el autor es persona trabajadora, recordó un suceso acontecido en la América <strong>de</strong>l Sur en aquellos días, que pudiera ser base para la novela hispanoamericana que se <strong>de</strong>seaba, puso mano a la pluma, evocó al correr <strong>de</strong> ella sus propias observaciones
192 MARTí/NOVELA y recuerdos, y sin alar<strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong> trama ni plan seguro, <strong>de</strong>jó rasg>lear la péñola, durante siete días, interrumpido a cada instante por otros quehaceres, tras <strong>de</strong> los cuales estaba lista con el nombre <strong>de</strong> “Amistad funesta” la que hoy con el nombre <strong>de</strong> Lucía Jerez, sale nuevamente al mundo. Ni es más, ni es meno5. Se publica en libro, porque así lo <strong>de</strong>sean los que sin duda no lo han leído. El autor, avergonzado, pi<strong>de</strong> excusa. Ya él -abe bien por dón<strong>de</strong> va, profutlda como un bisturí y útil como un médico, la novela mo<strong>de</strong>rna. El género no le place, sin embargo, porque hay mucho que fingir en él, y los goces <strong>de</strong> la creación artística no compensan el dolor <strong>de</strong> moverse en una ficción prolongada; con diálogos que nunca se han oído, entre personas que no han vivido jamás. Menos que todas, tienen <strong>de</strong>recho a la atención novelas como ésta, <strong>de</strong> puro cuento, en Ias que no es dado ten<strong>de</strong>r a nada serio, porque esto, a juicio <strong>de</strong> editores, aburre a la gente lectora; ni siquiera es lícito, por lo llano <strong>de</strong> 10s tiempos, levantar el espíritu <strong>de</strong>l público con hazañas <strong>de</strong> caballeros y <strong>de</strong> héroes, que han venido a ser personas muy fuera <strong>de</strong> lo real y <strong>de</strong>l buen gusto. Lean, pues, si quieren, los que lo culpen, este libro; que el autor ha procurado hacerst: perdonar con algunos <strong>de</strong>talles; pero sepan que el autor piensa muy mal <strong>de</strong> él. Lo cree inútil; y lo lleva sobre sí como una grandísima culpa. Pequé, Señor, pequé, sean humanitarios, pero perdónenmelo. Señor: no lo hark más. Yo quiero ver al valiente que saca <strong>de</strong> los Io una novela buena. En la novela había <strong>de</strong> haber mucho amor; alguna muerte; muchas muchachas, ninguna pasión pecaminosa; y nada que no fuese <strong>de</strong>l mayor agrado <strong>de</strong> los padre-s <strong>de</strong> familia y <strong>de</strong> los señores sacerdotes. Y había <strong>de</strong> ser hispanoamericano.” Juan empezó con mejores <strong>de</strong>stinos que los que al fin tiene, pero es’ que en la novela cortó su carrera cierta pru<strong>de</strong>nte observación, y hubo que convertir en mero galán <strong>de</strong> amores al que nació en la mente <strong>de</strong>l novelador dispuesto a más y a más altas empresas (gran<strong>de</strong>s) hazañas. Ana ha vivido, A<strong>de</strong>la también. Sol ha muerto’” Y Lucía, la ha matado. Pero ni a Sol ni a Lucía ha conocido <strong>de</strong> cerca el autor. CAPfTULO 1 Una frondosa magnolia, podada por el jardinero <strong>de</strong> la casa con manos <strong>de</strong>masiado académicas, cubría aquel domingo por la mañana con EU sombra a los familiares <strong>de</strong> la casa <strong>de</strong> Lucía Jerez. <strong>La</strong>s gran<strong>de</strong>s florea blancas <strong>de</strong> la magnolia, plenamente abiertas en sus ramas <strong>de</strong> hojas <strong>de</strong>lgadas Y puntiagudas, no parecían, bajo aquel cielo claro y en el patio <strong>de</strong> aquella casa amable, las flores <strong>de</strong>l árbol, sino las <strong>de</strong>l día, iesas flores inmensas e inmaculadas, que se imaginan cuando se ama mucho! El alma humana tiene una gran necesidad <strong>de</strong> blancura. Des<strong>de</strong> que lo blanco se oscurece, la <strong>de</strong>sdicha empieza. <strong>La</strong> práctica y conciencia <strong>de</strong> todas las virtu<strong>de</strong>s, la posesión <strong>de</strong> las mejores cualida<strong>de</strong>s, la arrogancia <strong>de</strong> los más nobles sacrificios, no bastan a consolar el alma <strong>de</strong> un solo extravío. Eran hermosas <strong>de</strong> ver, en aquel domingo, en el cielo fulgente, la luz azul, y por entre los corredores <strong>de</strong> columnas <strong>de</strong> mármol, la magnolia elegante, entre las ramas ver<strong>de</strong>s, las gran<strong>de</strong>-9 flores blancas y en sus mecedoras <strong>de</strong> mimbre, adornadas con lazos <strong>de</strong> cinta, aquellas tres amigas, en sus vestidos <strong>de</strong> mayo: A<strong>de</strong>la, <strong>de</strong>lgada y locuaz, con un ramo <strong>de</strong> rosas Jacqueminot al lado izquierdo <strong>de</strong> su traje <strong>de</strong> seda crema; Ana, ya próxima a morir, prendida sobre el corazón enfermo, en su vestido <strong>de</strong> muselina blanca, una flor azul sujeta con unas hebras <strong>de</strong> trigo; y Lucía, robusta y profunda, que no llevaba flores en su vestido <strong>de</strong> seda carmesí, “porque no se conocía aún en los jardines la flor que a ella le gustaba: ila flor negra!” <strong>La</strong>s amigas cambiaban vivazmente sus impresiones <strong>de</strong> domingo. Venían <strong>de</strong> misa ; <strong>de</strong> sonreír en el atrio <strong>de</strong> la catedral a sus parientes p conocidos; <strong>de</strong> pasear por las calles limpias, esmaltadas <strong>de</strong> sol, como flores <strong>de</strong>satadas sobre una ban<strong>de</strong>ja <strong>de</strong> plata con dibujos <strong>de</strong> oro. SUS amigas, <strong>de</strong>s<strong>de</strong> las ventanas <strong>de</strong> sus casas gran<strong>de</strong>s y antiguas, las habían saludado al pasar.
