Ficción y Realidad en <strong>la</strong> abra <strong>de</strong> Truman Capote<br />

Al Dewey, personaje con el cual <strong>la</strong> autobiografia <strong>de</strong> Capote se extien<strong>de</strong> en<br />

el libro. <strong>La</strong> primera información que da Capote sobre él es que es el<br />

encargado <strong>de</strong>l caso y que tiene cuarenta y siete años, también informa<br />

sobre que<br />

“Por Dewey, himself a former Sheriff of Finney<br />

County (from 1947 to 1955) and prior to that, a Special<br />

Agent ofthe FBI (between 1940 and 1945), he had served<br />

in New Orleans, in San Antonio, in Denver, in Miami and in<br />

San Francisco, was professionally qualified to cope with this<br />

intricate an affair as the apparently motiveless, alí but<br />

clueless Clutter mur<strong>de</strong>rs.” (Capote 1966:64)<br />

Por lo tanto <strong>la</strong> persona idónea a <strong>la</strong> que contactar, ya que aparte <strong>de</strong><br />

su capacidad (se pue<strong>de</strong> comprobar que todos estos datos <strong>de</strong> Dewey son<br />

ciertos), era una <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s personas que mejor conocía a <strong>la</strong> familia y una <strong>de</strong> <strong>la</strong>s<br />

personas que tanto profesional como personalmente tenía razones para<br />

querer esc<strong>la</strong>recer el caso cuanto antes. En el libro <strong>de</strong> Plimpton<br />

encontramos <strong>la</strong> referencia <strong>de</strong> Dewey cuando conoció a Capote<br />

“1 fi-st met Truman at the courthouse here in Gar<strong>de</strong>n<br />

City. It was within a week or ten days afier the crime, which<br />

had been committed on November 15, 1959. Truman and<br />

Harper Lee showed up at the courthouse. They introduced<br />

themselves and 1 had a little visit with them. The first time 1<br />

saw him he was wearing a small cap, a <strong>la</strong>rge sheepskin coat,<br />

and a ver>’ long, fairly narrow scarfthat trailed plumb to the<br />

tibor, and then some kind of moccasins... I’d never heard of<br />

Truman or Harper Lee before. 1 asked to seo his cre<strong>de</strong>ntials.<br />

He didn’t have any, which threw Truman for a íoop.”<br />
