“Por Dewey, himself a former Sheriff of Finney
County (from 1947 to 1955) and prior to that, a Special
Agent ofthe FBI (between 1940 and 1945), he had served
in New Orleans, in San Antonio, in Denver, in Miami and in
San Francisco, was professionally qualified to cope with this
intricate an affair as the apparently motiveless, alí but
clueless Clutter murders.” (Capote 1966:64)
“1 fi-st met Truman at the courthouse here in Garden
City. It was within a week or ten days afier the crime, which
had been committed on November 15, 1959. Truman and
Harper Lee showed up at the courthouse. They introduced
themselves and 1 had a little visit with them. The first time 1
saw him he was wearing a small cap, a large sheepskin coat,
and a ver>’ long, fairly narrow scarfthat trailed plumb to the
tibor, and then some kind of moccasins... I’d never heard of
Truman or Harper Lee before. 1 asked to seo his credentials.
He didn’t have any, which threw Truman for a íoop.”
