writer and as a celebrity, came early, when he was 23 years oíd and<br />

But the book that perhaps solidified his c<strong>la</strong>im to literar>’ fame was<br />
“In CoId Blood,” his <strong>de</strong>tailed, painstakingly researched and chilling account<br />
of the 1959 s<strong>la</strong>ying of a Kansas farm famil>’ and the capture, trial and<br />
execution of the two killers.<br />
Published serialí>’ in ‘[he New Yorker and then as a book in 1965,<br />
“In CoId Blood” consumed more than six years of his life. But it won him<br />
enthusiastic praise, mountains of publicity, millions of dol<strong>la</strong>rs and the<br />
luxur>’ of time to work on “Answered Prayers.”<br />
Rut he accelerated the speed of his journey to celebrity, appearing<br />
on television talk shows and, in his <strong>la</strong>nguid accent, which retained its<br />
Southem intonation, indulged a gift for purveying viperish wit and<br />
scandalous gossip. 1-le continued to cultivate seores of the famous as his<br />
friends and confidants, alí the while publishing little and, he said <strong>la</strong>ter,<br />
<strong>de</strong>veloping a formidable “writer’s block” that <strong>de</strong><strong>la</strong>yed completion of<br />
“Answered Prayers.”<br />
