el final, se pueden apreciar nuevos datos. Así, mientras Mrs.Kelly (que es
el nombre de la anciana) prepara la bebida, Capote repara en el nombre del
libro que la anciana está leyendo
“While she fetehed it 1 warmed my hands by the tire
and glanced around my room. It was a cheerful place
occupied by six or seven cats of varying alley-cat colois. 1
looked at the tittle of the book Mrs. Kelly- for that was her
name, as 1 later learned- had been reading; it was Emma by
Jane Austen, a favourite writer of mine” (Capote 1980:17)
Al respecto unas líneas más allá Capote continúa
“We talked by the fire until my eyes grew heavy. We
talked about Jane Austen (“ Ah, Jane. My tragedy is that
í’ve read alí her books so often 1 have them memorized”)
and other admired authors: Thoreau, Willa Cather, Dickens,
Lewis Carroll, Agatha Christie, Raymond Chandíer,
Hawthorne, Chekhov, De Maupassant...” (Capote 1980:18)
Se puede apreciar en la cita anterior los gustos literarios del Capote
personaje que, como no, se corresponden con los gustos literarios del
Capote persona. Solamente queda añadir algún nombre como Proust,
Flaubert, Faulkner, Isak Dínesen o Katherine Anne Porter. Así podemos
constatarlo en la siguiente cita extraida de una entrevista que el propio
autor concedió, por ejemplo, a la periodista Selma Robinson y de la cual ya
hemos hablado con anterioridad. En ella Capote dice en 1948 lo siguiente
influencias desde Poe hasta Welty, etc.. (Allmendinger:279)
