These and other challenges, dear Brothers, stand before the Church
of God in the United States—a beloved Church living in the power
of Christ's Spirit and called to ever greater holiness of life, especially
during this Marian Year of grâce. As you rise up humbly with your
people to meet thèse challenges, you have every reason to be fllled
with hope. In all your efforts to live worthily the mystery of the
Church, you are supported by the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
who, "as a sign of sure hope and solace", 16 accompanies you on your
pi] grimage of faith toward the final goal of eternai life in Christ
Jesus. As you make your pilgrim way along this path, I ask you
to take deep encouragement from the words of the Prophet: "The
Lord God is in your midst, a mighty savior ; he will rejoice over you
with gladness and renew you in his love". 17
In this love I send my Apostolic Blessing to ali your locai Churches,
being especially mindful of ali those w T ho bear the Cross of Christ
in pain and suffering.

1. Je suis heureux de vous accueillir à l'occasion de l'Assemblée
plénière du Secrétariat pour les non-croyants, réunie sous la pré­
sidence du Cardinal Paul Poupard, avec pour thème de réflexion :
(( Idéologies, mentalités et foi chrétienne ».
Vous avez choisi ce thème pour cerner de plus près le phénomène
complexe de l'athéisme, de la non-croyance et de l'indifférence reli­
gieuse, et déceler les facteurs qui y poussent l'homme contemporain.
2. Si les idéologies, nées des combats sociaux et des utopies athées
du xix e siècle, manifestent encore de la vigueur dans certaines régions
du monde, elles tendent cependant à stagner ou à s'affaiblir, même
