78 EPIPOGIUM APHYLLUM (F. W. SCHMIDT) SW. BASIONIMO ORCHIS APHYLLA F. W. SCHMIDT NOME COMUNE ORCHIDEA FANTASMA, EPIPOGIO Descrizione Pianta alta 10-20 cm, provvista <strong>di</strong> organi ipogei <strong>di</strong> aspetto coralloide. Scapo eretto, aclorofillico, generalmente cilindrico, cavo e fragile; foglie basali assenti, le cauline 1-2, ridotte a squame erette, appressate al fusto e ialine o rossastre. Infiorescenza lassa, <strong>di</strong> 2-8 fiori. Brattee ovoidali, membranacee, più lunghe dell’ovario. Fiori me<strong>di</strong>o-gran<strong>di</strong>, peduncolati e penduli, <strong>di</strong> colore variabile dal bianco-rosato al giallo-rossastro. Sepali e petali lanceolato-lineari, con apice ottuso, <strong>di</strong>vergenti e rivolti verso il basso; labello rivolto verso l’alto e in avanti, trilobo, con lobi laterali piccoli, arrotondati, giallastri, lobo me<strong>di</strong>ano molto più grande, cuoriforme, concavo, bianco o roseo, con margini rialzati e cosparso, sulla superficie, <strong>di</strong> creste e papille porporine; sperone sacciforme, rivolto in alto e piegato in avanti; l’ovario, munito <strong>di</strong> tre caratteristiche coste, non presenta torsione. Habitat Faggete e castagneti su substrato ricco <strong>di</strong> humus, tra 700 e 1000 m. Periodo <strong>di</strong> fioritura Giugno-agosto. Distribuzione Eurosiberiana. In Italia è segnalata in tutte le regioni, tranne Valle d’Aosta, Liguria, Umbria, Puglia e Italia insulare. Note tassonomiche Il nome generico deriva dal greco (epi = sopra e pogon = barba) e si riferisce al fatto che non essendoci la torsione dell’ovario, il labello resta in posizione superiore; l’epiteto specifico invece fa riferimento all’assenza <strong>delle</strong> foglie, dal momento che si tratta <strong>di</strong> una specie mico-eterotrofa. Questa specie, poco appariscente e <strong>di</strong> piccole <strong>di</strong>mensioni, spesso passa del tutto inosservata, confondendosi nel sottobosco tra la lettiera; analogamente a quanto accade in Limodorum abortivum, i fiori restano talvolta nascosti sotto terra e si autofecondano (cleistogamia). I rizo- mi possono inoltre frammentarsi e permettere a questa curiosa orchidea <strong>di</strong> riprodursi per via vegetativa. Note <strong>di</strong>stributive Si tratta <strong>di</strong> una specie rarissima a livello provinciale, essendo nota soltanto sul cono vulcanico del Monte Amiata, in pochissimi nuclei (1 quadrato su 52 - QN15) (Selvi, 1996). A causa <strong>delle</strong> ridotte <strong>di</strong>mensioni e del colore giallo-rossastro, può sfuggire all’osservazione e quin<strong>di</strong> in futuro non si esclude la possibilità <strong>di</strong> ulteriori ritrovamenti; tuttavia sembra essere abbastanza esigente riguardo all’habitat, restringendo alle zone montane con boschi freschi e substrato ricco <strong>di</strong> humus la <strong>di</strong>stribuzione potenziale.
