Is the “Daily Bread” in the Interpretation of Gregory of Nissa
Just Corporal?
The Cappadocian Gregory of Nyssa seems to present just a corporal and
ethic interpretation of the “daily bread”, almost excluding its spiritual and
mystical sense. But if we try to understand the exposition of the fourth petition
by St. Gregory in the light of his twofold concept of body and soul, as
well as in connection with the third petition, it becomes obvious that this
“necessary nutrition”is necessary not for the body only, but also for the
soul.
