Is the “Daily Bread” in the Interpretation of Gregory of Nissa<br />

Just Corporal?<br />

The Cappadocian Gregory of Nyssa seems to present just a corporal and<br />

ethic interpretation of the “daily bread”, almost excluding its spiritual and<br />

mystical sense. But if we try to understand the exposition of the fourth petition<br />

by St. Gregory in the light of his twofold concept of body and soul, as<br />

well as in connection with the third petition, it becomes obvious that this<br />

“necessary nutrition”is necessary not for the body only, but also for the<br />

soul.
