Tatiyam pi buddhaü saraõaü gacchāmi For the third time to the Buddha I go for refuge.<br />
Tatiyam pi dhammaü saraõaü gacchāmi For the third time to the Dhamma I go for refuge.<br />
Tatiyam pi saïghaü saraõaü gacchāmi. For the third time to the Saïgha I go for refuge.<br />
(LEADER:) Ti-saraõa-gamanaü niññhitaü. This ends the going to the three refuges.<br />
(ALL:) Āma bhante. Yes, Venerable Sir.<br />
[19] Pañca-Sīla (Receiving) The Five Precepts<br />
(THE LEADER THEN RECITES THE PRECEPTS LINE BY LINE, WITH THE LAY PEOPLE RECITING THEM LINE BY LINE AFTER<br />
HIM:)<br />
1. Pāõātipātā veramaõī sikkhā-padaü samādiyāmi I undertake the rule of training to refrain from killing living beings.<br />
2. Adinnādānā veramaõī sikkhā-padaü samādiyāmi I undertake the rule of training to refrain from stealing.<br />
3. Kāmesu micchācārā veramaõī sikkhā-padaü samādiyāmi.<br />
I undertake the rule of training to refrain from sexual misconduct.<br />
4. Musā-vādā veramaõī sikkhā-padaü samādiyāmi I undertake the rule of training to refrain from false speech (= lying).<br />
5. Surā-meraya-majja-pamādaññhānā veramaõī sikkhā- I undertake the rule of training to refrain from intoxicating liquors that lead to<br />
padaü samādiyāmi<br />
carelessness.<br />
(THE LEADER THEN CONCLUDES WITH THE FOLLOWING:)<br />
(RESPOND:)<br />
Imāni pañca-sikkhā-padāni. These are the five training rules.<br />
Sīlena sugatiü yanti. Through virtue they go to a good destination.<br />
Sīlena bhoga-sampadā. Through virtue is wealth attained.<br />
Sīlena nibbutiü yanti. Through virtue they go to Liberation.<br />
Tasmā sīlaü visodhaye. Therefore we should purify our virtue.<br />
Sādhu!, sādhu!, sādhu! Well (said)! Well (said)! Well (said)!<br />
