abhisambuddhā, cakkhu-karaõī ñāõa-karaõī upasamāya<br />

abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saüvattati.<br />

Ayam eva ariyo aññhaïgiko maggo seyyathīdaü: Sammādiññhi<br />

sammā-saïkappo sammā-vācā sammā-kammanto<br />

sammā-ājīvo sammā-vāyāmo sammā-sati sammāsamādhi.<br />

Ayaü kho sā bhikkhave majjhimā pañipadā tathāgatena<br />

abhisambuddhā, cakkhu-karaõī ñāõa-karaõī upasamāya<br />

abhiññāya sambodhāya nibbānāya saüvattati.<br />

Idaü kho pana bhikkhave dukkhaü ariya-saccaü: Jāti pi<br />

dukkhā jarā pi dukkhā maraõam pi dukkhaü, sokaparideva-dukkha-domanassupāyāsāpi<br />

dukkhā, appiyehi<br />

sampayogo dukkho piyehi vippayogo dukkho yam p’<br />

icchaü na labhati tam pi dukkhaü, saïkhittena<br />

pañcupādānakkhandhā dukkhā.<br />

[43] Idaü kho pana bhikkhave dukkha-samudayo ariyasaccaü,<br />

yāyaü taõhā ponobbhavikā nandi-rāga-sahagatā<br />

tatra tatrābhinandinī, seyyathīdaü: kāma-taõhā bhavataõhā<br />

vibhava-taõhā.<br />

Idaü kho pana bhikkhave dukkha-nirodho ariya-saccaü,<br />

yo tassā yeva taõhāya asesa-virāga-nirodho cāgo<br />

pañinissaggo mutti anālayo.<br />

Idaü kho pana bhikkhave dukkha-nirodha-gāminīpañipadā<br />

ariya-saccaü: ayam eva ariyo aññhaïgiko maggo,<br />

seyyathīdaü, Sammā-diññhi sammā-saïkappo, sammāvācā<br />

sammā-kammanto sammā-ājīvo, sammā-vāyāmo<br />

sammā-sati sammā-samādhi.<br />

Idaü dukkhaü ariya-saccan ti me bhikkhave pubbe<br />

ananussutesu dhammesu cakkhuü udapādi ñāõaü<br />

producing knowledge − leads to calm, to direct knowledge, to self-awakening,<br />

to Unbinding?<br />

Precisely this Noble Eightfold Path: right view, right resolve, right speech,<br />

right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right<br />

concentration.<br />

This is the middle way realized by the Tathāgata that − producing vision,<br />

producing knowledge − leads to calm, to direct knowledge, to self-awakening,<br />

to Unbinding.<br />

Now this, monks, is the noble truth of stress:<br />

Birth is stressful, aging is stressful, death is stressful, sorrow, lamentation,<br />

pain, distress, & despair are stressful,<br />

association with things disliked is stressful, separation from things liked is<br />

stressful, not getting what one wants is stressful,<br />

in short, the five clinging-aggregates are stressful.<br />

And this, monks, is the noble truth of the origination of stress: the craving that<br />

makes for further becoming − accompanied by passion & delight, relishing<br />

now here & now there − i.e., craving for sensual pleasure, craving for<br />

becoming, craving for no-becoming.<br />

And this, monks, is the noble truth of the cessation of stress: the remainderless<br />

fading & cessation, renunciation, relinquishment, release,& letting go of that<br />

very craving.<br />

And this, monks, is the noble truth of the way of practice leading to the<br />

cessation of stress: precisely this Noble Eightfold Path − right view, right<br />

resolve, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right<br />

mindfulness, right concentration.<br />

Vision arose, insight arose, discernment arose, knowledge arose, illumination<br />

arose within me with regard to things never heard before: ’This is the noble
