it has a sound to which <strong>the</strong>re is none simi-<br />

lar <strong>in</strong> English, but resembl<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

French word, jrrairie, a meadow ; as <strong>in</strong><br />

airidh, worthy, ^r, men.<br />
