Figure 11: Laboratory scale monitoring of stress near pipes stressed by bending or by internal pressure. The pipes are supported by a central saddle and tied together at one end. They are bent by jacking the other ends together. Bending stresses are determined by strain gauges bonded to the peak stress point of the pipe and are verified by stress calculations from both the measured deflection and the required force. Internal pressure is provided hydraulically. A fluxgate magnetometer is being used to monitor the stress induced changes in the external field. This is a sensitive device used for geomagnetic prospecting, mine detection, etc. The pipes can be arranged at any horizontal and vertical angle to the earth's magnetic field in order to investigate its effect.
