122 Read to your child every day. Sit where the two of you are comfortable and focus on the pictures rather than the words. Point to the pictures and name the objects. Choose books with rhymes and funny words. When you read with your child use a pleasant voice to let him know you enjoy reading together. Stop reading when your child loses interest. Use a puppet or stuffed animal to tell stories to your child instead of reading a book. Have lots of books available for your child to“read”. Choose books with large,colorful pictures showing things your one year old will find interesting. Include books about people of different cultures and abilities. Do not be surprised to find your child carrying books around with her. Model the joy of reading by sharing books that you enjoy. Sing rhyming finger plays and songs with your child.
