Model safety rules and state them in as few words as possible. Be positive—show
and tell your child what “to do” instead of what “not to do.” Show him what you
mean when you say “Walk” (instead of “Don’t run”) or “We sit in the chair” (instead
of “Don’t climb on the chair.”)
Talk about the different types of clothing you and your child are wearing when it is
cold, hot, or rainy.
Notice when your child is tired and encourage her to lie down and rest. You may
need to go with her or give her a book or favorite stuffed animal to encourage her
to stop what she is doing and settle down.
Take a training (sippy) cup of water with you when you play outside. Encourage your
child to come for a drink when he is thirsty.
Children learn eating habits very early. Make healthy food choices for yourself and
your family.
