priori of things only what we ourselves put into them” (CPR Bxviii). For this reason, Kant
concludes, reason plays a negative role in the Critique of Pure Reason. “On a cursory view of the
present work it may seem that its results are merely negative, warning us that we must never
venture with speculative reason beyond the limits of experience. Such is in fact its primary use”
(CPR Bxxiv). However, it is important to note that this is not Kant’s whole story about reason.
