touchstone <strong>of</strong> what we are adopting as our new method <strong>of</strong> thought, namely that we can know a<br />

priori <strong>of</strong> things only what we ourselves put into them” (CPR Bxviii). For this reason, Kant<br />

concludes, reason plays a negative role in the Critique <strong>of</strong> Pure Reason. “On a cursory view <strong>of</strong> the<br />

present work it may seem that its results are merely negative, warning us that we must never<br />

venture with speculative reason beyond the limits <strong>of</strong> experience. Such is in fact its primary use”<br />

(CPR Bxxiv). However, it is important to note that this is not Kant’s whole story about reason.<br />
