<strong>Ugaritic</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Primer</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Akkadian texts c<strong>on</strong>temporary with <strong>Ugaritic</strong> alphabetic texts aid<br />

us in developing pr<strong>on</strong>unciati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>Ugaritic</strong> words. 1 However, the<br />

actual pr<strong>on</strong>unciati<strong>on</strong>s remain c<strong>on</strong>jectural. In this c<strong>on</strong>text, it is<br />

important to distinguish between graphemes (i.e., the written letter<br />

representing a sound) <strong>and</strong> ph<strong>on</strong>emes (i.e., the sounds themselves).<br />

Scholars hypothesize about ph<strong>on</strong>emes based <strong>on</strong> the correlati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

graphemes. The following hypothetical “Proto-Semitic” (*PS)<br />

ph<strong>on</strong>emes have merged into <strong>on</strong>e <strong>Ugaritic</strong> grapheme: 2<br />

*d <strong>and</strong> *d usually are represented by the <strong>Ugaritic</strong> grapheme d; e.g.,<br />

dbh = /dabhu
