A <str<strong>on</strong>g>Primer</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Ugaritic</strong> is an introducti<strong>on</strong> to the language of the ancient city of<br />

Ugarit, a city that flourished in the sec<strong>on</strong>d millennium BCE <strong>on</strong> the Lebanese<br />

coast, placed in the c<strong>on</strong>text of the culture, literature, <strong>and</strong> religi<strong>on</strong> of this ancient<br />

Semitic culture. The <strong>Ugaritic</strong> language <strong>and</strong> literature were a precursor to Canaanite<br />

<strong>and</strong> serve as our most important resources for underst<strong>and</strong>ing the Old Testament<br />

<strong>and</strong> the Hebrew language. Special emphasis is placed <strong>on</strong> the c<strong>on</strong>textualizati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

the Ugartic language <strong>and</strong> comparis<strong>on</strong> to ancient Hebrew as well as Akkadian. The<br />

book begins with a general introducti<strong>on</strong> to ancient Ugarit, <strong>and</strong> the introducti<strong>on</strong> to<br />

the various genres of <strong>Ugaritic</strong> literature is placed in the c<strong>on</strong>text of this introducti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The language is introduced by genre, beginning with prose <strong>and</strong> letters, proceeding<br />

to administrative, <strong>and</strong> finally introducing the classic examples of <strong>Ugaritic</strong> epics.<br />

A summary of the grammar, a glossary, <strong>and</strong> a bibliography round out the volume.<br />

William M. Schniedewind chairs the Department of Near Eastern <strong>Language</strong>s <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>Culture</strong>s <strong>and</strong> is a Professor of Biblical Studies at UCLA. He is most recently the<br />

author of How the Bible Became a Book, published in 2005.<br />

Joel H. Hunt is a former professor at Azusa Pacific University (Azusa, CA) <strong>and</strong><br />

has Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena, CA).
