7.4.8 Noun Patterns<br />

Scholars have attempted to categorize <strong>and</strong> interpret the varied types<br />

of nouns in the Semitic languages by organizing them according to<br />

the various prefixes, infixes, suffixes, <strong>and</strong> vowel changes used to<br />

modify the basic root word. Scholars often use the root QTL as the<br />

base for illustrating the patterns discovered. For instance, the most<br />

comm<strong>on</strong> noun pattern is qatl. Atthe beginning of <strong>Ugaritic</strong> study<br />

these patterns provide a h<strong>and</strong>y descriptive tool for underst<strong>and</strong>ing<br />

<strong>Ugaritic</strong> itself, as well as a point of departure to begin comparing<br />

<strong>Ugaritic</strong> with other Semitic languages. Occasi<strong>on</strong>ally, scholars have<br />

been able to determine that a particular semantic range of meaning
