EQUIPMENT NEEDS IN MASS DISASTERS<br />

1. Disaster Packs x 4 from ECC.<br />

Each containing Airway, Breathing,<br />

Circulation, Drug, Dressing, I.V.&<br />

Survival Kits. Refer Appendix 2<br />

2. Access to refrigerated drugs for<br />

drug kits.<br />

3. Specialised Operating Theatre<br />

Packs to be brought by Theatre staff<br />

for Mobile Team use. Consider:<br />

Amputation, Burns, or Plastics<br />

Packs.<br />

REMEMBER: In mass casualty<br />

situations where you are<br />

overwhelmed, minimum intervention<br />

is a priority.<br />

Airways: Position , clear, &<br />

oro/naso/pharyngeal airway only.<br />

(No intubations.)<br />

Breathing: IV cannulae, ICC’s, &<br />

Heimlich valves for pneumothorax.<br />

Circulation: Pressure/dressings over<br />

external bleeding sites, consider IV<br />

access<br />

The increased triage & skill level <strong>of</strong> current paramedics has greatly reduced the likely<br />

requirement <strong>of</strong> a Mobile Medical Team to visit a disaster site, except for specialised<br />

extractions or limb salvage or post-disaster care to the community.<br />
