CODE GREY<br />
<strong>EMERGENCY</strong> RESPONSE CO-ORDINATOR<br />
Mental <strong>Health</strong> Services and Emergency <strong>Department</strong> (24 hours per<br />
day, seven days per week.)<br />
• Nurse in Charge or nominated delegate <strong>of</strong> that department at the time<br />
<strong>of</strong> the response acts as Code Grey Emergency Response Co-ordinator<br />
( 24 hours per day, seven days per week).<br />
• Assistance may be sought from the Hospital Emergency Co-ordinator<br />
on request.<br />
Inpatient Ward Areas<br />
• Nurse Unit Manager (NUM ) <strong>of</strong> the area involved in the incident acts<br />
as Code Grey Emergency Response Co-ordinator during the hours<br />
7:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday - Friday.<br />
• The Hospital Emergency Co-ordinator will attend Code Grey<br />
incidents but, if the NUM is available and does not require support,<br />
may leave.<br />
All other areas and times<br />
• Rostered Hospital Emergency Co-ordinator/Hospital After Hours Coordinator.<br />
The Co-ordinator will:<br />
• Attend location and assess the situation in consultation with <strong>Department</strong> Staff<br />
and other members <strong>of</strong> the Emergency Response Team.<br />
• Attempt to defuse the violent outcomes by appropriate use <strong>of</strong> interpersonal<br />
skills.<br />
• Coordinate activities <strong>of</strong> the Violence Management Team and clear the area <strong>of</strong><br />
unnecessary staff.<br />
• Liaise with the Emergency Response Medical Officer in developing a plan to<br />
control the situation.<br />
• Ensure that appropriate Unit Medical Officer has been alerted<br />
