PREVENTION<br />

• Keep eyes open for strangers.<br />

• Identify those persons who are known to be violent.<br />

• Be alert to recognize precursors <strong>of</strong> violence and assess the situation.<br />

• Attempt to defuse or call Security if concerned.<br />

• In the Emergency Care Centre, loiterers are discouraged by establishing whether or<br />

not they are attending as patients and requesting that they leave if they have no<br />

reason for their presence.<br />

• Adhere to existing simple security precautions, eg, lock doors.<br />

DEFUSING<br />

Remain calm, cautious, courteous and consistent.<br />

Employing interpersonal skills as appropriate may <strong>of</strong>ten defuse the situation:<br />

• Be non-confrontational initially.<br />

• Try to find out why the person is upset/angry.<br />

• Could someone else communicate more readily?<br />

• Being assertive (not aggressive) may be more appropriate.<br />
