It appears that life continues to show signs of "intelligence" (and strict
Darwinism is perpetually beset by Lamarckian, Bergsonian, Reichian and
other heresies) because the genetic code, like the binary used in computers
and 1 Ching is a logical language and does produce either "thought" or an
analog of thought.
It is even more amusing (or, for the Fundamentalist Materialist, anxietyprovoking)
to note that Joyce seems to have anticipated even the shape of
the DNA in a famous passage in Ulysses, published over 30 years before the
scientific confirmation from Watson and Crick: Stephen Dedalus, walking
toward the Pigeon House (that again!) thinks of the genetic memory as a
telephone cable and then whimsically reflects:
