COINCIDANCE 173
committed the murder wrongly attributed to Henry Flower.
The solicitor who took this confession was John Cusack, son of Michael
Cusack who gave Bloom/Flower a hard time in Ulysses.
The "coincidance" of Michael Cusack and Nicholas of Cusa and John
Cusack and Henry Flower across space-time could not have been known in
full to Joyce's conscious mind, of course, which is why any theory of Joyce's
novels must take into account the reality of the non-local function he
abbreviates as
Bloom's "real" name—i.e. his father's name, before he changed it by deed
poll—was Virag, which can be translated as either Bloom or Flower. But
Virag is a Hungarian cognate of the Sanscrit vaina, which happens to mean
thunderbolt and reminds us of Vico's notion that all human thought was
instigated by our desire to understand and come to terms with the Giant
Thing that seems to roar at us from the sky.
Padraic Pearse, who became part of Joyce's Pearse O'Reilly ( ) once had
an argument with Joyce about whether Gaelic thurnuk was a more poetic
word than the English "thunder" which means the same. Pearse was an
associate of Cusack in the Irish Nationalist movement (which Joyce as a
cosmopolitan despised); but Delia Bacon, if you are following this, claimed
that the plays of butcher Shakespeare ( ) were not written by her
ancestor, Sir Francis Bacon ( ) as other eccentrics claim, but by a
collaboration of Shakespeare, Bacon and Raleigh ( ), a theory
which gets great play in FW, whether Joyce believed it or not, because
Raleigh is thought in Ireland to derive from Reilly and because Delia Bacon
fits both the boar-god symbolism (Bacon-Ham-Hamlet-pork-Adonis etc.)
and the bear-god symbolism, Delia being a title of Artemis. At this point we
can only recognize that a bear-god and a boar-god are easily conflated in the
unconscious, and note that the chain Aleph-alpha-Ab-Abel-butcher-bakercandlestock-Cad-Cadenus
ties most of our themes together, making links
from the Old Testament to Swift's love life, and is still based on the simple
progression A-B-C.
Thus, in the second paragraph of FW, we find
not yet, though venissoon after, had a kidscad buttended a
bland old Isaac
On the level of Old Testament reference, this invokes caddish Jacob
pretending to be Esau to get the blessing of their father, Isaac—Jacob and
Esau being another of Joyce's warring twin ( ) combinations. On the
level of Irish politics of Joyce's day, this is Parnell, a cadet member of the
Home Rule party unseating Isaac Butt (buttended ... isaac) as leader. Two of
