The "coincidance" of Michael Cusack and Nicholas of Cusa and John
Cusack and Henry Flower across space-time could not have been known in
full to Joyce's conscious mind, of course, which is why any theory of Joyce's
novels must take into account the reality of the non-local function he
abbreviates as
Bloom's "real" name—i.e. his father's name, before he changed it by deed
poll—was Virag, which can be translated as either Bloom or Flower. But
Virag is a Hungarian cognate of the Sanscrit vaina, which happens to mean
thunderbolt and reminds us of Vico's notion that all human thought was
instigated by our desire to understand and come to terms with the Giant

Raleigh is thought in Ireland to derive from Reilly and because Delia Bacon
fits both the boar-god symbolism (Bacon-Ham-Hamlet-pork-Adonis etc.)
and the bear-god symbolism, Delia being a title of Artemis. At this point we
can only recognize that a bear-god and a boar-god are easily conflated in the
unconscious, and note that the chain Aleph-alpha-Ab-Abel-butcher-bakercandlestock-Cad-Cadenus
ties most of our themes together, making links
from the Old Testament to Swift's love life, and is still based on the simple
progression A-B-C.
