The implementation of a model of person-centred practice in older person settings
“I can get to Mass at the end of the yard to a lovely little church … anytime I get the
chance. It’s a bit of a break in the monotony of it … If I could get to Mass more often
t’would be handy. I wanted to go to Mass on [specific Holy Day] but there was
nobody to take me” (Resident story)
Overall, the data demonstrates that a range of processes have been put in place to
facilitate residents’ choices including the use of biography and reminiscence – Image
4.1 is one such example and illustrates the kind of creative practices that have been
implemented in order to develop individualised approaches to care. Further
examples of these can be seen in the work described in Chapter 2 (individual site
reports). There was a general sense from the data of staff trying hard to pay
attention to choices and to respecting individual preferences. However, there is still
much work to be done in the facilitation of choice as reflected in much of the data, in
order to ensure that ‘facilitating choice’ is a central aspect of the way practice is
organised and a focus of relationship building.
