The implementation of a model of person-centred practice in older person settings
Final evaluation of findings, action plans and achievements (Third
Phase):
Following the analysis of data and the interpretation of the findings, the emerging
themes from the three sites were similar and centred on improving quality of life
issues:
o Choice, no voice
o Respect
o Routines
o Powerlessness
o Meals and mealtimes
o Caring (being cared for and acceptance and dependence)
o Meaningful activities, boredom, outings etc
o Environment, space, noise,
o Family connections, loneliness, depression, isolation, visitors
o Attitudes
o Finance
participants continued to work with their action plans as they were ongoing and at
different stages of development.
sites proved to be both popular and informative to staff. The information obtained
provided new ways of “thinking” and “doing” for example in caring for people with
dementia. One IF obtained new knowledge about how the environment can impact
on residents with dementia and influenced the management team on how best to
maximise the planned decor of their proposed new building. Being person–centred
relies on getting close to the person going beyond traditional notions of routine care
etc. Even with the concept of “team nursing” participants have articulated how in
today’s climate of healthcare “reforms” and “transformation” even the notion of
individualised care is at times compromised. Moving towards person-centred care in
some of the initiatives highlighted, means providing care and services that are
