Falcarragh Community Hospital is one <strong>of</strong> 11 Community Hospitals and Nursing Units<br />

in County Donegal. <strong>The</strong> hospital was purpose built in 1980 and all accommodation is<br />

organised on one floor. <strong>The</strong>re are 35 in-patient beds and a day hospital; also on the<br />

grounds is a primary care centre that provides a General Practitioner and MDT<br />

service to the wider community <strong>of</strong> Falcarragh. Within the hospital there is a small<br />

church which is used daily by the residents and also widely used by members <strong>of</strong> the<br />

community. <strong>The</strong> range <strong>of</strong> services <strong>of</strong>fered in the Community Hospital over the last<br />

number <strong>of</strong> years has expanded in response to client need, service development and<br />

reconfiguration <strong>of</strong> the health services. As well as the ability to provide continuing<br />

care beds there is also an allocation for respite, rehab/convalescence and palliative<br />

care. Community Mental Health Services in Donegal also use an area within the<br />

hospital as a day facility for their clients. <strong>The</strong> hospital is located in North West<br />

Donegal and is situated in a rural area, the nearest large urban town is Letterkenny<br />

which is approximately 30 miles away. <strong>The</strong> geographical area is a Gaeltacht area,<br />

where the Irish language is the first language for many <strong>of</strong> the older people and<br />

healthcare staff utilising the service.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Programme Group – Falcarragh Community Hospital<br />

Two internal facilitators were recruited to work with the NMPDU facilitator and<br />

programme group. One <strong>of</strong> the IFs is a Staff Nurse working in the ward area and the<br />

other IF a CNM 2 who is mainly based in the day hospital, although alternates to the<br />
