<strong>The</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> a model <strong>of</strong> person-centred practice in older person settings<br />
care workers to support working in person-centred ways. <strong>The</strong> themes that emerged<br />
from the quantitative data (<strong>Person</strong>-<strong>Centred</strong> Nursing <strong>In</strong>dex (PCNI) and <strong>Person</strong>-<br />
<strong>Centred</strong> Caring <strong>In</strong>dex (PCCI)) regarding staff were:<br />
o Work related stress<br />
o Job satisfaction<br />
o Organisational culture<br />
o Empowerment<br />
o Organisational commitment<br />
And from the Context Assessment <strong>In</strong>dex (CAI) were<br />
o Leadership<br />
o Cultural<br />
o Evaluation<br />
o Context<br />
<strong>The</strong> findings from these were discussed using reflective questioning and the<br />
challenge was to make initiatives/innovations tangible and relevant to<br />
residents/patients, families and staff and a starting point was to challenge the taken–<br />
for–granted perceptions <strong>of</strong> care and caring and to build on the existing body <strong>of</strong> best<br />
practice. <strong>The</strong> following were the proposed local action plans based on the data<br />
gathered:<br />
• Hospital greeting cards (welcome cards) (Image 2.4) for new patients and staff<br />
were designed by the participants and printed. One site sent sympathy cards on<br />
behalf <strong>of</strong> the staff and management to the family <strong>of</strong> residents following their<br />
death. Christmas Cards were designed by the participants in one site and given<br />
to the residents/patients from the staff and management.<br />
• Effective communication between service users and service providers were<br />
fostered and care plans were modified to take account <strong>of</strong> the Activity <strong>of</strong> Living<br />
(Working and Playing). Communication was enhanced by including Healthcare<br />
Assistants at handover in one hospital that did not previously engage in this<br />
process.<br />
• Residents/patients were facilitated to become more active in their daily life,<br />
participate in decision-making about their care and have choices with regards to<br />
their preferences and needs. Residents’ bed spaces were personalised with their<br />
