2.9 Planning, monitoring and reporting<br />

As a national government department, Stats SA has to comply with the <strong>Statistics</strong> Act (Act No. 6 of 1999), the Public<br />

Finance Management Act (Act No. 1 of 1999), and Treasury Regulations for government departments, issued in terms of<br />

the PFMA (May 2002) with respect to planning and monitoring.<br />

2.9.1 Planning<br />

Stats SA conducts three annual planning sessions; strategic planning, business planning, and integrative operational<br />

planning.<br />

The outputs of these planning sessions are as follows:<br />

a. Strategic planning: A strategic plan and annual work programme that are approved by the Minister in the Presidency<br />

responsible for the National Planning Commission and tabled in Parliament.<br />

b. Business planning: Divisional strategic plans that outline annual outputs and targets to be achieved for the<br />

c. Integrative operational planning: Detailed project and operational plans that outline activities and tasks to be<br />

conducted monthly.<br />

2.9.2 Monitoring and reporting<br />

a. Annual reporting: An annual report on the overall performance of the organisation in terms of the annual targets<br />

outlined in the strategic plan and/or work programme is compiled and tabled in Parliament.<br />
