over 11 months <strong>in</strong> support of a unique operation. My troops<br />
were family; we lived, ate, and slept together 24 hours daily.<br />
Thus, the lessons learned are numerous and based on<br />
practical experience. However, one must recognize the<br />
unique circumstances surround<strong>in</strong>g Operation JOINT<br />
ENDEAVOR. Any <strong>in</strong>sight ga<strong>in</strong>ed from this paper must<br />
receive full consideration <strong>in</strong> the context of its impact on<br />
Field Artillery and Comb<strong>in</strong>ed Arms <strong>Operations</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
BACKGROUND<br />
Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR was <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong><br />
December 1995 as a NATO-led peace enforcement operation<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Former Republic of Yugoslavia. U.S. forces from the<br />
1st Armored Division served as the peace implementation<br />
force (IFOR) <strong>in</strong> accordance with the General Agreement for<br />
<strong>Peace</strong> <strong>in</strong> Bosnia-Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a concluded at Dayton, Ohio, <strong>in</strong><br />
December 1995.<br />
The 4th Battalion, 29th Field Artillery (4-29 FA) was an<br />
organic unit of the 1st Armored Division, V Corps, and<br />
United States <strong>Army</strong> Europe (USAREUR). It deployed <strong>in</strong><br />
support of Operation JOINT ENDEAVOR from December<br />
17, 1995, through November 30, 1996. The battalion no<br />
longer exists as an active unit, as it was redesignated the<br />
4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery <strong>in</strong> February 1997.<br />
4-29 FA was a M109A2 equipped, 3x8 155mm cannon<br />
unit based <strong>in</strong> Baumholder, Germany, and assigned a direct<br />
support mission to the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Armored<br />
Division. The unit was organized as a standard selfpropelled<br />
Field Artillery battalion consist<strong>in</strong>g of five<br />
batteries: three cannon, one service, and one headquarters.<br />
The battalion was reorganized for Operation JOINT<br />
ENDEAVOR as a Field Artillery Task Force (TF) with the<br />
addition of a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS)<br />
