(10) TA-50 must be cleaned, <strong>in</strong>spected, and replaced, and<br />

additional cold weather items issued to each soldier. This is sergeants<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess. CSM lead. Also, until further notice, soldiers can no longer wear<br />

jungle boots. Too much of a cold-weather risk.<br />

(11) All <strong>in</strong>dividual soldier equipment must be <strong>in</strong>spected and<br />

packed (A+B bags). Pack<strong>in</strong>g lists complete, bags labelled. Aga<strong>in</strong>, sergeants<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />

(12) Class IV UBL ordered, procured, and combat loaded. S-4<br />

work with battery commanders.<br />

(13) Inspect all tents, cots, and heaters. Order what we need.<br />

Soldiers will no longer sleep <strong>in</strong> vehicles.<br />

2.We must conduct measured, planned, and deliberate tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />

preparation for a possible cold weather deployment— DO NOT WASTE<br />

TIME.<br />

3. Take care of our soldiers and their families by tak<strong>in</strong>g this approach as<br />

serious bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Failure could result <strong>in</strong> the loss of life. Work normal duty<br />

hours with weekends off; however, this may not be possible for all <strong>in</strong> view of<br />

SINCGARS field<strong>in</strong>g and other events. Schedule 13 and 20 November 1995 as<br />

tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g holidays and do the best you can to ensure quality of life “time off.”<br />

4. In clos<strong>in</strong>g, don’t let up. Look at the little th<strong>in</strong>gs and enforce<br />

lieutenants and sergeants to be accountable for their people. I will not<br />

tolerate any more “half-stepp<strong>in</strong>g” by our junior leaders. Every man counts—<br />

o<br />

every family is critically important. Remember to th<strong>in</strong>k 360° while<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g to operate on a 6400-mil spectrum.<br />

compla<strong>in</strong>t. My leaders <strong>in</strong> particular were true professionals<br />

who wanted to be successful and thus were more than<br />

will<strong>in</strong>g to do whatever was asked. The toughest task was<br />

conv<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>g family members the merits of a 12-month<br />

deployment. Diane and I personally spoke to every battery<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>gent and their family members at least twice prior to<br />

deployment and regularly communicated between Bosnia<br />

and Baumholder on a daily basis. I felt as if I were runn<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

public relations campaign to conv<strong>in</strong>ce family members of<br />

the merits of the deployment. The general attitude was that<br />

we had no bus<strong>in</strong>ess be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Bosnia and certa<strong>in</strong>ly no<br />
