support<strong>in</strong>g the movement of fuel tankers, lost an assigned<br />

weapon belong<strong>in</strong>g to a young soldier. After report<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

loss through the cha<strong>in</strong> of command, the platoon spent an<br />

entire night look<strong>in</strong>g for the weapon. F<strong>in</strong>ally, the platoon<br />

leader went to the local MP unit for assistance. To his great<br />

relief, the weapon was <strong>in</strong> the possession of the military<br />

police who found the weapon ly<strong>in</strong>g alongside the road.<br />

CONCLUSION<br />

Despite these close calls, I am very proud of the overall<br />

accomplishments of the battalion and its soldiers. The<br />

battalion proved its worth by its operation of the A/DACG<br />

sites at Ramste<strong>in</strong> and Rhe<strong>in</strong> Ma<strong>in</strong> Air Bases, conduct of<br />

convoy escorts and convoy support centers, and l<strong>in</strong>e-haul<br />

operations <strong>in</strong> support of Theater and EAGLE EXPRESS<br />

missions. Consider that the battalion also deployed half its<br />

strength to Taszar, Hungary, re-deployed that half and then<br />

deployed the other half, concurrently while conduct<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

majority of its CR theater support mission. Add<strong>in</strong>g to that<br />

the conduct of the USAREUR Drivers’ Academy (FWD), it is<br />

hard to conta<strong>in</strong> my pride and admiration. F<strong>in</strong>ally, and I<br />

<strong>in</strong>tentionally did not mention this <strong>in</strong> the ma<strong>in</strong> text of this<br />

monograph, is the fact that my battalion won both the<br />

USAREUR Battalion Ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and Supply Excellence<br />

competitions while support<strong>in</strong>g OJE.<br />

Teamwork and professional pride contributed to our<br />

successes. Every soldier played his/her significant role <strong>in</strong><br />

help<strong>in</strong>g the 28th support the <strong>Army</strong>’s largest military<br />

operation conducted <strong>in</strong> the European Theater s<strong>in</strong>ce World<br />

War II. From December 1995 to the time of my change of<br />

command <strong>in</strong> July 1996, the battalion drove nearly 8 million<br />

miles; moved over 172,000 tons of cargo and equipment; and<br />

exceeded the <strong>Army</strong>’s safety standard for military vehicle<br />

accidents.<br />

This accomplishment over 7 months is phenomenal<br />

when compared to the battalion’s entire performance<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the previous calendar year. The total battalion<br />
