Creating Amalgams,<br />

Simulacra & Changelings<br />

Amalgams, Simulacra, and Changelings represent<br />

three very different approaches to the creation of “artificial<br />

life”. Amalgams are the revivification of the dead,<br />

Simulacra are nourished by the blood of their creators,<br />

and Changelings represent the reshaping of the living<br />

into new forms.<br />

8.1<br />

AMALGAMS<br />

An Amalgam is created by assembling a collection of<br />

body parts from multiple corpses, joining these parts<br />

into a single body using Surgery and magic, and drawing<br />

a wandering spirit or soul shard into the body by electrical<br />

means. Amalgams look “like death warmed up”.<br />

Translucent skin reveals their network of veins and<br />

arteries, while their eyes are yellowing and pus-filled,<br />

their breath is fetid, and surgical stitches demarcate the<br />

edges of each part of their body jigsaw.<br />

A “Living” Amalgam is made by grafting one or more<br />

body parts from a corpse (or alternatively transplanting<br />

a mechanical appendage or organ) by Surgery and magic<br />

into the body of a living person. The transplant may then<br />

be used to control the person.<br />

Creating Amalgams of either type requires access to<br />

the Amalgam Law spell list.<br />

8.1.1 THE ASSEMBLY PROCESS<br />

A Reanimator (as many of the surgeon-mages who<br />

create Amalgams style themselves) needs a secure workroom<br />

for engaging in his craft and ready access to dead<br />

bodies. Raiding the local graveyard for freshly buried<br />

corpses will suffice for humanoid Amalgams; acquiring<br />

the raw material for animal and monstrous Amalgams<br />

may require hiring hunters who can be trusted to bring<br />

back the remains quickly. Every day of decomposition<br />

increases the difficulty of creating a functional Amalgam.<br />

Reanimators should cast Preserve Amalgam on<br />

harvested body parts as soon as possible as this suspends<br />

the deterioration process. This spell should be renewed<br />

as necessary until the creation process is complete.<br />

For true Amalgam creation, the Reanimator requires at<br />

least two corpses (preferably but not necessarily of the<br />

same species), with more bodies being needed if the<br />

corpses are incomplete or damaged. An Amalgam cannot<br />

be fashioned from a single corpse as that is reanimating the<br />

dead, which is the province of Lifegiving and necromancy.<br />

Having obtained the necessary bodies, the Reanimator<br />

must first dismantle them and then perform the equally<br />

gruesome task of stitching the pieces together. This<br />

process takes a number of days equal to the intended<br />

level of the Amalgam. On each day of reassembly, the<br />

Reanimator must cast an Amalgam # spell of equivalent<br />

or higher level than the Amalgam’s level.<br />

Example: Doctor Frankenstein wishes to <strong>construct</strong> a<br />

7th-level Amalgam. This will take him seven days<br />

and require him to cast Amalgam X on the pieces<br />

each day.<br />

On the final day of the process, the Reanimator must<br />

make a Surgery maneuver to determine the quality of the<br />

workmanship, particularly the number of Weaknesses<br />

and Improvements possessed by the Amalgam.<br />
