Introduction<br />

This is an interdepartmental program <strong>of</strong>fering the bachelor’s,<br />

master’s <strong>and</strong> doctoral degrees. The program is academically<br />

supervised by the Interdisciplinary Committee on Latin<br />

American Studies (ICLAS) in the College <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>and</strong> Sciences<br />

Undergraduate Major Study<br />

Requirements<br />

The undergraduate program provides a solid foundation in<br />

language skills <strong>and</strong> area competence that can be valuable in<br />

business, public service or further pr<strong>of</strong>essional training.<br />

The major in Latin American Studies consists <strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong><br />

36 hours, including the required courses outlined in A, B, C,<br />

D <strong>and</strong> E below. Students will work closely with the Academic<br />

Advisor <strong>and</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong> Latin American Studies in planning<br />

their program <strong>of</strong> study <strong>and</strong> must receive approval for all<br />

course work in fulfillment <strong>of</strong> the major.<br />

A. Languages <strong>of</strong> Latin America (maximum <strong>of</strong> 12 hours<br />

counted toward the major): Students are required to<br />

achieve pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in two Latin American languages.<br />

There are three tracks for fulfilling the language requirement:<br />

1) Spanish track with Portuguese support skills, requiring<br />

Spanish 301-302 <strong>and</strong> Portuguese 275 or 276.<br />

2) Portuguese track with Spanish support skills, requiring<br />

Portuguese 311-312 <strong>and</strong> Spanish 101-102.<br />
