attention will be given to stylistics <strong>and</strong> the analysis <strong>of</strong> style<br />

<strong>and</strong> literary language.<br />

Introduction to fundamentals <strong>of</strong> literary analysis: defining a<br />

research question; gaining access to resources; selecting<br />

approaches to texts; citing bibliographic data according to<br />

Methodology required to produce an edition—everything from<br />

locating an editable text to actually producing the edition.<br />

Main emphasis is on deciphering gothic script (13th–17th<br />

centuries) <strong>and</strong> resolving textual problems.<br />

A survey <strong>of</strong> major Spanish masterpieces from the Jarchas<br />

to the Celestina.<br />

The study <strong>of</strong> Lazarillo de Tormes, Guzmán de Alfarache, El<br />

buscón <strong>and</strong> other 17th-century picaresque novels.<br />

523. Renaissance <strong>and</strong> Baroque Poetry. (3)<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> major Spanish poets <strong>of</strong> the 16th <strong>and</strong> 17th centuries.<br />

525. The Spanish Comedia <strong>of</strong> the Golden Age. (3)<br />

An exploration <strong>of</strong> the comedia <strong>and</strong> its theatrical <strong>and</strong> social<br />

context, beginning with works by Lope de Vega <strong>and</strong> ending<br />

with the school <strong>of</strong> Calderón. Includes a study <strong>of</strong> trends in literary<br />

criticism <strong>and</strong> theater theory relative to the comedia.<br />

Modern <strong>and</strong> contemporary drama <strong>of</strong> Spain from Benavente<br />

to the present. Close study <strong>of</strong> the works <strong>of</strong> major playwrights<br />

<strong>and</strong> trends in dramatic criticism <strong>and</strong> theatrical production.<br />

The resurgence <strong>of</strong> the novel following the repressive Civil <strong>and</strong><br />

post-Civil War years (1936–1939). Includes the introduction<br />

<strong>of</strong> tremendismo (Cela, Laforet), neo-realist novels, experimental<br />

ones <strong>and</strong> the initial boom <strong>of</strong> women writers (Martín<br />

Gaite <strong>and</strong> Tusquets).<br />

A survey course covering Spanish American poetry from<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> readings in Mexican literature emphasizing Mexico’s<br />
