275. Accelerated Beginning Spanish. (6)<br />

Intensive one-semester course designed for language enthusiasts<br />

who want a review or can devote the time required to<br />

cover two semesters in one. Equivalent to 101 <strong>and</strong> 102.<br />

276. Accelerated Intermediate Spanish. (6)<br />

Intensive one-semester course designed for language enthusiasts<br />

who want a review or can devote the time required to<br />

cover two semesters in one. Equivalent to 201 <strong>and</strong> 202.<br />

Prerequisites: 102 or 112 or 275.<br />

278. Spanish for Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. (3) 1<br />

Specially designed course for pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in the fields <strong>of</strong><br />

medicine, law, business, <strong>of</strong>fice management. Attention given<br />

to specialized pr<strong>of</strong>essional vocabularies.<br />

301. Topics in Hispanic Culture <strong>and</strong> Language. (3) ∆<br />

Taught in Spanish (required for major study). Consult current<br />

major requirements for number <strong>of</strong> times course may be<br />

repeated for credit. Emphasis on oral <strong>and</strong> written expression<br />

based on a theme or language related topics (literature, culture,<br />

civilization, translation, commercial, etc.)<br />

302. Developing Spanish Writing Skills. (3)<br />

Taught in Spanish (required for major study). Emphasis on<br />

developing Spanish written expression.<br />

Accelerated course for graduate reading requirements.<br />

Emphasizes fundamentals <strong>of</strong> grammar. Will not satisfy A&S<br />

351. Introduction to Spanish Linguistics. (3)<br />

An introduction to the phonology, morphology, syntax <strong>and</strong><br />

dialectology <strong>of</strong> the Spanish language.<br />

Prerequisite: 302.<br />

**352. Advanced Grammar. (3)<br />

Required for Spanish majors. Taught in Spanish. Analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

morphological <strong>and</strong> syntactic structure.<br />

Pre- or corequisites: 302.<br />

353. Spanish as a World Language. (3)<br />

Introduction to varieties <strong>of</strong> Spanish used in Europe, North <strong>and</strong><br />

West Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Pacific <strong>and</strong> by isolated<br />

groups, including Judeo-Spanish. Includes comparison with<br />

U.S. varieties.<br />

Prerequisite: 301. Pre- or corequisite: 302.<br />

371. Spanish <strong>of</strong> the Southwest. (3)<br />

Attention to formal aspects <strong>of</strong> the Spanish <strong>of</strong> the Southwest<br />

as well as to historical <strong>and</strong> social factors affecting its status.<br />

**443. Spanish Morphology. (3)<br />

Word structure, the gender system <strong>and</strong> the verb system from<br />

the viewpoint <strong>of</strong> modern linguistic theory.<br />

Deals with different areas, approaches <strong>and</strong> issues.<br />

540. Latin American Dialectology. (3)<br />

Exploration <strong>of</strong> selected features (phonological, morphological,<br />

syntactic <strong>and</strong> lexical) <strong>of</strong> regional, social <strong>and</strong> stylistic variation<br />

in New World Spanish.<br />

541. Recent Research on the Teaching <strong>of</strong> Spanish. (3)<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> the latest research in first <strong>and</strong> second language<br />

acquisition. Focus is placed on the practical application <strong>of</strong> its<br />

results to the teaching <strong>of</strong> Spanish. Required <strong>of</strong> all Spanish<br />

Teaching Assistants.<br />

542. History <strong>of</strong> the Spanish Language. (3)<br />

The phonological, grammatical <strong>and</strong> lexical development from<br />

Latin to Spanish.<br />

Prerequisite: 351 or LING 292.<br />

543. Spanish Syntax. (3)<br />

Description <strong>and</strong> explanation <strong>of</strong> Spanish morophological, syntactic<br />

<strong>and</strong> discourse phenomena from the functionalist point<br />

<strong>of</strong> view, taking account <strong>of</strong> both the functional motivations <strong>and</strong><br />

cognitive representations <strong>of</strong> such phenomena.<br />

545. Spanish Phonology. (3)<br />

The main tenets <strong>of</strong> contemporary phonological theory as<br />

applied to Spanish, including the evolution <strong>of</strong> phonological<br />

analysis, as well as current research trends.<br />

546. Seminar in Hispanic Sociolinguistics. (3, no limit)<br />

∆<br />

Linguistic variation in relation to internal, social, regional <strong>and</strong><br />

situational factors. Topics include variation theory, language<br />

contact, language <strong>and</strong> gender, <strong>and</strong> language planning. The<br />

practical application <strong>of</strong> sociolinguistic approaches will be<br />

introduced.<br />

547. Seminar in Southwest Spanish. (3)<br />

Research seminar covering all aspects <strong>of</strong> Chicano Spanish:<br />

linguistic structure, regional <strong>and</strong> social variation, bilingualism,<br />

maintenance <strong>and</strong> shift, English influence, etc.<br />

Prerequisite: 351 or LING 292.<br />

548. Old Spanish. (3)<br />

The phonological, grammatical, <strong>and</strong> lexical properties <strong>of</strong><br />

Mozarabic, Old Castilian <strong>and</strong> Judeo-Spanish, as well as<br />

the historical events explaining their origins <strong>and</strong> subsequent<br />

fate.<br />

549. Seminar in the Language <strong>of</strong> Spain or Spanish<br />

America. (3, no limit) ∆<br />

An advanced course providing students with the opportunity<br />

to develop expertise in linguistic analysis. A broad range <strong>of</strong><br />

branches are covered, including sociolinguistics, discourse<br />

analysis, phonetics, mophosyntax, semantics <strong>and</strong> psycholinguisticis.<br />

Prerequisite: 351 or LING 292.<br />

550. Language Contact. (3)<br />

The study <strong>of</strong> linguistic contacts between speakers <strong>of</strong> Spanish<br />

<strong>and</strong> African languages, indigenous languages <strong>of</strong> North<br />

<strong>and</strong> South America, languages <strong>of</strong> Spain, <strong>and</strong> English.<br />

Includes Creoles <strong>and</strong> permanent cross-linguistic influences<br />

on Spanish.<br />
