Language <strong>and</strong> Literature <strong>and</strong> in Rhetoric <strong>and</strong> Writing. The<br />

M.A. concentration in Language <strong>and</strong> Literature, <strong>and</strong> the M.A.<br />

concentration in Rhetoric <strong>and</strong> Writing must be taken under<br />

Plan II, according to the regulations set forth in earlier pages<br />

<strong>of</strong> this catalog <strong>and</strong> in accordance with the requirements set<br />

forth below.<br />

Graduate Minor<br />

Students who wish to declare a graduate minor in English<br />

must notify the Director <strong>of</strong> English Graduate Studies before<br />

completing 6 <strong>of</strong> the required 15 hours in English graduate<br />

work. Students must complete the following requirements for<br />

the English Graduate Minor for Plan II.<br />

Requirements (Plan II): 15 hours distributed as follows:<br />

English 500, Introduction to the Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Study <strong>of</strong><br />

English<br />

12 hours <strong>of</strong> 500 <strong>and</strong>/or 600-level English <strong>Department</strong><br />

classes, selected under advisement <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong><br />

English Graduate Studies.<br />

M.A. Concentration in Language <strong>and</strong><br />

Literature (32 hours)<br />

The M.A. Concentration in Language <strong>and</strong> Literature emphasizes<br />

research <strong>and</strong> writing, originality <strong>and</strong> tradition to promote<br />

well-rounded scholars in British <strong>and</strong> American literature,<br />

literary history <strong>and</strong> criticism, <strong>and</strong> language theory. Applicants<br />

should already possess a Bachelor’s degree in English or a<br />

related discipline. The degree requires 32 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework,<br />

a Foreign Language, a Master’s Examination, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

Portfolio <strong>of</strong> 2 essays.<br />

The 32 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework are distributed across core<br />

requirements <strong>and</strong> electives. Core requirements include<br />

English 500 (Introduction to Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies); English<br />

595 (Master’s Colloquium); <strong>and</strong> English 596 (Portfolio),<br />

along with one 4-hour graduate-level seminar <strong>and</strong> an English<br />

pedagogy class. The remaining credit hours are made up by<br />

electives distributed across different periods <strong>of</strong> literary history<br />

in courses numbered 500 or above.<br />

All students in the M.A. Language <strong>and</strong> Literature concentration<br />

must meet a foreign language requirement; take <strong>and</strong><br />

pass the MA 50-item exam; <strong>and</strong> submit a two-essay portfolio<br />

for evaluation <strong>and</strong> final approval. The Graduate Committee<br />

must approve the portfolio before the Master’s degree can<br />

be conferred.<br />

MA in English, Concentration in<br />

Rhetoric <strong>and</strong> Writing (32 hours)<br />

Optional emphases in Teaching <strong>and</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

Writing<br />

A Master’s <strong>of</strong> Arts in English with Concentration in Rhetoric<br />

<strong>and</strong> Writing prepares graduates for careers in pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

writing <strong>and</strong> post-secondary teaching. Students interested in<br />

teaching study pedagogical theories <strong>and</strong> develop practical<br />

applications in traditional classrooms <strong>and</strong> in online or tutoring<br />

venues. Students interested in pr<strong>of</strong>essional writing enroll in<br />

writing workshops, where they strengthen existing abilities<br />

<strong>and</strong> sharpen technical expertise in a variety <strong>of</strong> genres; internship<br />

placements in workplace pr<strong>of</strong>essional writing venues<br />

are optional.<br />

Students may choose an emphasis in Writing or Teaching; all<br />

students work under Plan II (no thesis); a portfolio (English<br />

596) is required.<br />

9 hours <strong>of</strong> core required courses: 542 <strong>and</strong> 543; 537 or 538<br />

or 539.<br />

10 hours <strong>of</strong> three courses, including one 4-hour seminar, chosen<br />

from at least two <strong>of</strong> the groups A-F listed in the English<br />

<strong>Department</strong> Graduate Studies H<strong>and</strong>book.<br />

12 hours <strong>of</strong> general electives: Four courses from among 538-<br />

545, 513-520, 587, or other courses in English as approved<br />

by their Committee on Studies (COS) <strong>and</strong> the Graduate<br />

Director; students may <strong>of</strong>fer up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> courses from<br />

departments outside <strong>of</strong> English as Electives as approved<br />

by their COS <strong>and</strong> the Graduate Director; students may <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> English 597 (Problems) for work related<br />

to teacher training or pr<strong>of</strong>essional writing experience, as<br />

approved by their COS <strong>and</strong> the Graduate Director.<br />

1 hour <strong>of</strong> Masters Portfolio, English 596: In the semester<br />

before graduation, students prepare a portfolio <strong>of</strong> work under<br />

the direction <strong>of</strong> their COS which is presented for evaluation in<br />

the ninth week <strong>of</strong> the student’s final semester <strong>of</strong> attendance.<br />

Emphasis in Teaching (12 hours)<br />

Teaching Emphasis students take 537 or 538 or 539 (depending<br />

on what they take for the Core Requirement above) plus<br />

9 hours in other pedagogy-based courses <strong>of</strong>fered in English,<br />

the College <strong>of</strong> Education, or other departments as approved<br />

by their COS <strong>and</strong> the Graduate Director; up to 6 hours may<br />

be <strong>of</strong>fered as Teaching Practicum (English 597, Problems).<br />

Emphasis in Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Writing (12 hours)<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Writing Emphasis students must take 539,<br />

either in the Core Requirement or as an elective, plus 9 or<br />

12 hours (depending on where they count 539) from 513-<br />

520, 587. Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Writing Emphasis students may take<br />

up to 6 hours <strong>of</strong> courses in other departments as approved<br />

by their COS <strong>and</strong> the Graduate Director; up to 6 hours<br />

may be <strong>of</strong>fered as Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Writing Internship (English<br />

598, Internship, CR/NC) as approved by their COS <strong>and</strong> the<br />

Graduate Director.<br />

M.A. Concentration in Medieval<br />

Studies<br />

The M.A. concentration in Medieval Studies is designed for<br />

students who wish to pursue an interdisciplinary Master’s<br />

degree in medieval English literature. The course <strong>of</strong> study<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a multicultural <strong>and</strong> interdisciplinary foundation for the<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the Middle Ages <strong>and</strong> hence would appeal to students<br />

who wish to continue their studies in the medieval period<br />

above the B.A. level but below the Ph.D. It will also appeal to<br />

secondary school teachers who are seeking a multi-disciplinary<br />

content-intensive M.A. degree. Finally, the M.A. concentration<br />

prepares the student for the Ph.D. Concentration in<br />

Medieval Studies.<br />

This concentration requires 34 hours <strong>of</strong> interdisciplinary<br />

course work, <strong>of</strong> which 22 hours must be in English. Please<br />

see the department’s Web site <strong>and</strong> Graduate Studies<br />

H<strong>and</strong>book for specific policy <strong>and</strong> procedures.<br />

M.F.A. in Creative Writing (49 hours)<br />

The UNM Master <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing is<br />

designed for students committed to pursuing the writing life.<br />

This three-year degree combines studio-based workshops<br />

in fiction, poetry <strong>and</strong> creative nonfiction with craft seminars<br />

<strong>and</strong> coursework in literature, teaching pedagogy, <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

writing. Students also spend each <strong>of</strong> their final two<br />

semesters working individually with a faculty mentor towards<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> a book-length manuscript suitable for<br />

publication. Our widely published creative writing faculty,<br />

along with a distinguished visiting writers series, a faculty <strong>and</strong><br />

student reading series, the acclaimed Taos Summer Writing<br />

Conference, <strong>and</strong> a national literary magazine, all make for an<br />

exciting atmosphere for the study <strong>of</strong> writing.<br />

Applicants to the M.F.A. program should already hold a<br />

Bachelor’s degree. The program requires 49 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework<br />

(excluding dissertation hours); a comprehensive exam;<br />

<strong>and</strong> a creative dissertation. There is no foreign language<br />

requirement for the completion <strong>of</strong> the M.F.A.<br />

The M.F.A.’s 49 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework are distributed over core<br />

requirements that include English 501 (Introduction to the<br />

UNM CATALOG 2006–2007 Symbols, page 611.
