Introduction<br />

The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Linguistics <strong>of</strong>fers a B.A. major <strong>and</strong> minor<br />

in Linguistics; a B.S. major in Signed Language Interpreting;<br />

an M.A. <strong>and</strong> Ph.D. in Linguistics; <strong>and</strong> contributes to linguistics-related<br />

degree programs in other departments <strong>and</strong><br />

colleges. The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong>fers a range <strong>of</strong> courses in the<br />

core areas <strong>of</strong> phonetics, phonology, syntax, semantics, <strong>and</strong><br />

discourse as well as in the interdisciplinary fields <strong>of</strong> applied<br />

linguistics, psycholinguistics, <strong>and</strong> sociolinguistics. The<br />

<strong>Department</strong> has a theoretical orientation based in functional<br />

<strong>and</strong> cognitive approaches <strong>and</strong> has teaching <strong>and</strong> research<br />

strengths in the areas <strong>of</strong> typology, language evolution, sociocultural<br />

<strong>and</strong> interactional studies, fieldwork, discourse analysis,<br />

<strong>and</strong> experimental inquiry. In addition the <strong>Department</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>fers programs <strong>of</strong> study in linguistics, with concentrations<br />

in Computational Linguistics, Speech <strong>and</strong> Hearing Sciences,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Native American Languages <strong>of</strong> the Southwest, <strong>and</strong><br />

specializes in the area <strong>of</strong> signed languages. The faculty also<br />

participates in the Ph.D. program in Educational Linguistics,<br />

sponsored jointly by the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Linguistics <strong>and</strong> the<br />

College <strong>of</strong> Education’s <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Language, Literacy <strong>and</strong><br />

Sociocultural Studies. The program in Educational Linguistics<br />

focuses on issues in bilingual <strong>and</strong> multicultural education <strong>and</strong><br />

in second language learning <strong>and</strong> pedagogy.<br />

Major Study Requirements<br />

Linguistics<br />

The B.A. major in Linguistics requires a minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 hours<br />

numbered above 200 (24 in required courses, 12 in approved<br />

electives) <strong>and</strong> four semesters <strong>of</strong> a second language or the<br />

equivalent. Required courses are: LING 292, 303, 304, 322,<br />

331, 367, 412 or 446, 425 or 429. The 12 hours in approved<br />

electives may be selected from courses in linguistics or from<br />

courses in other departments approved by the <strong>Department</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Linguistics.<br />

Signed Language Interpreting<br />

The B.S. major in Signed Language Interpreting requires the<br />

following courses: SIGN 201, 210, 211, 212, 214, 310, 352,<br />

360, 411, 412, 418, 419 <strong>and</strong> LING 101. Students majoring<br />

in Signed Language Interpreting must be approved by the<br />

department.<br />

Languages<br />

An interdisciplinary B.A. major in languages is <strong>of</strong>fered through<br />

the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Foreign Languages <strong>and</strong> Literatures in conjunction<br />

with the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Spanish <strong>and</strong> Portuguese. The<br />

<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Linguistics makes available several courses<br />

that qualify for this major. Consult with the advisor in the<br />

<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Foreign Languages <strong>and</strong> Literatures.<br />

Minor Study Requirements<br />

The minor in Linguistics requires 21 hours <strong>of</strong> courses numbered<br />

200 or above: 12 hours <strong>of</strong> required linguistics courses<br />

(LING 292, 303, 304, <strong>and</strong> 322) <strong>and</strong> 9 hours <strong>of</strong> electives. The<br />

electives may be selected from courses in linguistics or from<br />

courses in other departments which have been approved by<br />

the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> Linguistics.<br />

Minor in Navajo Language <strong>and</strong><br />

Linguistics<br />

The minor in Navajo Language <strong>and</strong> Linguistics requires<br />

21 hours <strong>of</strong> Navajo language <strong>and</strong> Navajo linguistics courses:<br />

NVJO 101–102, 201–202, 311, 312 <strong>and</strong> 401. Nine additional<br />

hours must be selected from the following courses or<br />

from approved electives from Linguistics, LLSS or Native<br />

American Studies: LING 292, 331, <strong>and</strong> 415.<br />

Major or Minor in the College <strong>of</strong><br />

Education<br />

For the major, composite major or minor in language arts,<br />

bilingual education, teaching English to speakers <strong>of</strong> other<br />

languages (TESOL), <strong>and</strong> reading, see the Bilingual/TESOL<br />

Education, Elementary Education <strong>and</strong> Secondary Education<br />

section <strong>of</strong> this catalog.<br />

<strong>Department</strong>al Honors<br />

A student seeking departmental honors in the <strong>Department</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Linguistics (for majors in either Linguistics or Signed<br />

Language Interpreting) should identify a research project<br />

during the junior year in consultation with an appropriate<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>and</strong> should submit a proposal in the form <strong>of</strong> a letter<br />

to the department chairperson.<br />

If the proposal is approved by the department chairperson,<br />

the student should enroll in LING 498 the first semester <strong>of</strong> the<br />

senior year <strong>and</strong> LING 499 the second semester <strong>of</strong> the senior<br />

year. These 6 hours <strong>of</strong> honors work are in addition to the<br />

minimum number <strong>of</strong> hours required for the major.<br />

ARTS AND<br />

SCIENCES<br />

Signed Language Studies<br />

The B.A. major in Linguistics with a concentration in Signed<br />

Language Studies requires 36 hours (24 required, 12 in<br />

approved electives) <strong>and</strong> four semesters <strong>of</strong> American SIGN<br />

Language or the equivalent. Required courses are SIGN 305,<br />

352, 355 <strong>and</strong> LING 322, 331 or 359, 367, 412, 425 or 429.<br />

Electives must be approved by the department advisor.<br />
