The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in <strong>Mathematics</strong> degree is awarded<br />

under either Plan I 26 hours <strong>and</strong> 6 hours thesis (thesis option)<br />

or Plan II 32 hours (non-thesis option). There is no minor<br />

requirement. The thesis option is best suited for students<br />

seeking jobs in industry or government laboratories. At least<br />

18 hours (Plan I) or 24 hours (Plan II) <strong>of</strong> the program must<br />

be in the department. Knowledge <strong>of</strong> a foreign language is<br />

not required.<br />

It is possible to earn a master’s degree on a part-time basis<br />

at the Los Alamos Center for Graduate Studies. The training<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice at this Center should be consulted for details.<br />

Ph.D. in <strong>Mathematics</strong><br />

Concentrations: pure mathematics, applied mathematics.<br />

The Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy in <strong>Mathematics</strong> degree is <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

by the department with concentrations in the areas <strong>of</strong> pure<br />

mathematics <strong>and</strong> applied mathematics. Knowledge <strong>of</strong> one<br />

foreign language chosen from French, German or Russian<br />

is expected.<br />

General requirements for both the M.S. <strong>and</strong> Ph.D. degrees<br />

are given in the earlier pages <strong>of</strong> the catalog. Lists <strong>of</strong> required<br />

courses, the number <strong>of</strong> hours that must be taken in courses<br />

labeled Math <strong>and</strong> various concentrations may be found in the<br />

H<strong>and</strong>book for Graduate Students in <strong>Mathematics</strong>. Copies <strong>of</strong><br />

the H<strong>and</strong>book can be found on the Web site: http://www.math.<br />

NOTE: MATH 501 <strong>and</strong> 502 cannot be counted toward<br />

hours needed for graduate degrees in <strong>Mathematics</strong><br />

<strong>and</strong> Statistics.<br />

Graduate Minor in <strong>Mathematics</strong><br />

For a graduate minor at least 9 hours <strong>of</strong> work in mathematics<br />

or statistics approved by both the student’s major department<br />

<strong>and</strong> the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mathematics</strong> <strong>and</strong> Statistics are<br />

required. A student may receive a Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Education<br />

with supporting courses in mathematics or statistics.<br />

Students desiring to take a course who do not have the indicated<br />

prerequisite should consult with the course instructor.<br />

Statistics Major Study<br />

Requirements<br />

The following is required <strong>of</strong> all Statistics majors.<br />

1. Assignment <strong>of</strong> a faculty advisor. Students must go to<br />

the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mathematics</strong> <strong>and</strong> Statistics to be<br />

assigned an advisor from the Statistics Group as soon<br />

as they decide to major in statistics.<br />

2. STAT 145 or approved equivalent.<br />

3. Knowledge <strong>of</strong> a computing language at the level <strong>of</strong><br />

CS 152L.<br />

4. MATH 162, 163, 264 <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> 314 or 321.<br />

5. At least 21 hours <strong>of</strong> statistics courses numbered 250 or<br />

above (with a grade <strong>of</strong> C [not C-] or better). These must<br />

include STAT 345, 427, 428, 440 <strong>and</strong> 445.<br />

6. Enrichment courses: At least 6 additional hours <strong>of</strong><br />

courses numbered 300 or higher <strong>and</strong> approved by the<br />

student’s undergraduate advisor. These can be taken<br />

in an appropriate discipline <strong>of</strong> the student’s choice, for<br />

example: anthropology, biology, business, chemistry,<br />

computer science, economics, engineering, mathematics,<br />

psychology <strong>and</strong> statistics. These courses may<br />

overlap with the student’s minor.<br />

7. The pass/fail (CR/NC) option may not be used in<br />

courses taken to satisfy requirements 2, 4 <strong>and</strong> 5. All<br />

grades in these courses must be C (not C-) or better.<br />

Additional information for statistics majors.<br />

1. For students interested in a career in actuarial science,<br />

preparation for the first actuarial exam consists<br />

<strong>of</strong> the courses MATH 162, 163, 264 <strong>and</strong> 314 or 321.<br />

Preparation for the second actuarial exam consists<br />

<strong>of</strong> the courses STAT 453 <strong>and</strong> 461. For information on<br />

actuarial careers <strong>and</strong> other exams consult a Statistics<br />

advisor.<br />

2. Students planning on pursuing a graduate degree in<br />

Statistics are encouraged to take MATH 321 <strong>and</strong> 401.<br />

Statistics Minor Study<br />

Requirements<br />

One year <strong>of</strong> calculus, STAT 145, 345, 427, 428 <strong>and</strong> an<br />

additional 3 hours <strong>of</strong> mathematics or statistics in courses<br />

numbered 250 <strong>and</strong> above. The pass/fail (CR/NC) option may<br />

not be used for minor study <strong>and</strong> the grades in all mathematics<br />

<strong>and</strong> statistics courses must be C (not C-) or better.<br />

Minor in <strong>Mathematics</strong><br />

Requirements for a Statistics Major<br />

MATH 264 <strong>and</strong> 12 hours <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mathematics</strong> courses numbered<br />

above 300. All 12 hours must be in courses labeled MATH.<br />

(Note that a separate Statistics Minor for <strong>Mathematics</strong> majors<br />

is available.) The pas/fail (CR/NC) option may not be used for<br />

minor study <strong>and</strong> the grades in all mathematics courses must<br />

be C (not C-) or better.<br />

<strong>Department</strong>al Honors<br />

Requirements for departmental honors in Statistics are 1) a<br />

3.5 GPA in major courses <strong>and</strong> a 3.2 overall GPA; 2) notification<br />

to department honors advisor no later than two full semesters<br />

prior to graduation; 3) completion <strong>of</strong> a project based on 6 credits<br />

<strong>of</strong> STAT 495 (project outline to be presented to the Statistics<br />

Undergraduate Honors Committee [SUHC] for approval);<br />

4) final written report to be submitted to SUHC for approval;<br />

<strong>and</strong> 5) seminar to be given at the end <strong>of</strong> the project. These<br />

requirements are in addition to the major requirements.<br />

Statistics Degrees Offered<br />

M.S. in Statistics<br />

Concentrations: applied statistics, theoretical statistics.<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science degree student should have taken<br />

introductory statistics, linear algebra <strong>and</strong> a calculus sequence<br />

including multivariable calculus. Promising students lacking<br />

an adequate undergraduate background may be admitted to<br />

the graduate program but will be required to remove undergraduate<br />

deficiencies.<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Statistics degree is awarded under<br />
