Studies in the literary <strong>and</strong> cultural emergence <strong>and</strong> formation<br />

topics include The Early English Novel; The 18th-Century<br />

Comic Novel; <strong>and</strong> Race, Class <strong>and</strong> Gender in the 19th-<br />

Century Novel.<br />

Studies in one or more <strong>of</strong> the major genres <strong>of</strong> literature,<br />

including narrative fiction, poetics, comedy, epic, satire <strong>and</strong><br />

Practicum on teaching literature <strong>and</strong> literary studies. Study <strong>of</strong><br />

Workshop requiring peer review, journal research <strong>and</strong> rhetorical<br />

studies.<br />

595. Master’s Colloquium. (3)<br />

A capstone course for Master’s students that takes a broad<br />

view <strong>of</strong> British <strong>and</strong> American literature. Using topical, thematic,<br />

generic <strong>and</strong> other critical approaches, the colloquium<br />

focuses upon issues that overlap British <strong>and</strong> American literature<br />

such as The Gothic, Themes <strong>of</strong> Exile, The Formation <strong>of</strong><br />

the Subject, etc.<br />

ENGLISH-PHILOSOPHY<br />

Introduction<br />

The combined major in English <strong>and</strong> philosophy is an interdepartmental<br />

major administered jointly by the two departments.<br />

Students interested in this program should consult<br />

the Philosophy <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the interdepartmental<br />

major is to develop an underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> the history<br />

<strong>of</strong> ideas, ideals, <strong>and</strong> values; their expression in literature <strong>and</strong><br />

philosophy; <strong>and</strong> the relation <strong>of</strong> these fields. The major will<br />

serve the interests <strong>of</strong> general education <strong>and</strong> will also be useful<br />

to many pre-pr<strong>of</strong>essional students.<br />

Major Study Requirements<br />

Students completing the English-philosophy major are not<br />

required to have a minor. It is recommended that courses in<br />

literature <strong>and</strong> philosophy in related periods be taken concurrently<br />

where possible.<br />

The minimum requirement is 45 hours including:<br />

1. Eighteen hours in English courses, 12 <strong>of</strong> which are to<br />

be numbered 300 or above. Recommended courses:<br />

250, The Analysis <strong>of</strong> Literature, 410, Criticism <strong>and</strong><br />

Theory.<br />

2. Eighteen hours in Philosophy courses, 12 <strong>of</strong> which are<br />

to be numbered 300 or above. Recommended courses<br />

are PHIL 156, at least one <strong>of</strong> 201 or 202, at least one <strong>of</strong><br />

352, 354 or 358.<br />

3. Six hours additional <strong>of</strong> English or Philosophy numbered<br />

300 or above.<br />
