Introduction<br />

The Health, Medicine <strong>and</strong> Human Values (HMHV) program,<br />

the undergraduate component <strong>of</strong> UNM’s combined BA/MD<br />

Degree Program, presents a unique opportunity for a select<br />

group <strong>of</strong> qualified Freshmen who wish to become physicians.<br />

The program is open to 25 students <strong>and</strong> five alternates each<br />

Fall (application <strong>and</strong> eligibility criteria are described below).<br />

Following an integrated curriculum that covers a broad base<br />

<strong>of</strong> interdisciplinary course work in the humanities, social<br />

sciences, mathematics, <strong>and</strong> physical sciences, program participants<br />

will complete a Bachelor’s degree at the end <strong>of</strong> four<br />

years, after which they will complete their Doctor <strong>of</strong> Medicine<br />

(MD) degree in the School <strong>of</strong> Medicine at UNM where a seat<br />

will have been reserved for them.<br />

The HMHV program <strong>of</strong>fers students flexibility in choosing an<br />

undergraduate major while providing them with a structured<br />

pre-Medical Core <strong>of</strong> special seminars focusing upon humanities,<br />

fine arts, <strong>and</strong> social/behavioral sciences studies in the<br />

context <strong>of</strong> health science <strong>and</strong> medicine; with experiential<br />

learning practica; <strong>and</strong> with a suite <strong>of</strong> mathematics <strong>and</strong> physical/natural<br />

science courses that will prepare them for medical<br />

school.<br />

In consultation with the HMHV / BA/MD advisor, program participants<br />

choose one <strong>of</strong> the following options: 1) the Arts <strong>and</strong><br />

Sciences major; 2) the Health, Medicine <strong>and</strong> Human Values<br />

major: Health, Humanities <strong>and</strong> Society concentration, or 3)<br />

the Health, Medicine <strong>and</strong> Human Values major: Biomedical<br />

Sciences concentration. Option I is designed for students<br />

who wish to receive a BA (or BS) degree in a liberal arts field,<br />

such as Anthropology, Biology, English, History, Psychology,<br />

or Sociology. Option II is designed for students who prefer a<br />

distributed liberal arts <strong>and</strong> sciences program <strong>of</strong> study. And<br />

Option III is designed for those students who wish to pursue<br />

a rigorous program <strong>of</strong> study in the physical <strong>and</strong> natural sciences.<br />

All three options include a suite <strong>of</strong> courses in the<br />

humanities, social sciences, mathematics, <strong>and</strong> physical <strong>and</strong><br />

natural sciences that prepare the student for medical school.<br />

Note: The HMHV Program does not require students<br />

to elect a minor.<br />

Admissions <strong>and</strong> Eligibility<br />

Who is Eligible to Apply. To be eligible to apply for the program,<br />

applicants must:<br />

1. Be currently enrolled in good st<strong>and</strong>ing as a senior in<br />

high school or equivalent;<br />

2. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident <strong>of</strong> the United<br />

States;<br />

3. Be a resident <strong>of</strong> New Mexico for tuition <strong>and</strong> scholarship<br />

purposes.<br />

In addition, students who apply to the program should<br />

demonstrate strong academic <strong>and</strong> personal potentials for<br />

success in the BA/MD program. The following academic<br />

characteristics are not baseline requirements but are <strong>of</strong>fered<br />

as guidelines.<br />

To complete the BA <strong>and</strong> MD within eight years, a student will<br />

need to have earned a score <strong>of</strong> 24 or better on the ACT (1110<br />

or better on the SAT Critical Reading & Math) <strong>and</strong> to have<br />

earned a 3.50 GPA, both overall <strong>and</strong> in the specific college<br />

preparatory units required for admission to UNM.<br />

Note: Students who are interested in the Biomedical<br />

Sciences concentration, should have completed the<br />

equivalent <strong>of</strong> MATH 121 or 150 before entering the<br />

program.<br />

How to Apply<br />

The application deadline is December 1 <strong>of</strong> the senior year<br />

in high school. Students must apply for admission to UNM,<br />

Albuquerque campus, <strong>and</strong> submit all required application<br />

materials (see below) before they can be considered for the<br />

HMHV program.<br />

Application Materials<br />

1. UNM Admissions Application.<br />

2. Combined BA/MD / HMHV Supplemental Application.<br />

3. ACT <strong>and</strong> / or SAT Test Scores.<br />

4. High School Transcripts (sixth semester – through<br />

the end <strong>of</strong> the Junior year – by Dec 1; <strong>and</strong> seventhsemester<br />

– through Fall term <strong>of</strong> Senior year – by mid-<br />

January).<br />

5. Three individual recommendation forms from teachers<br />

— at least one from a math or science teacher <strong>and</strong> one<br />

from another teacher in the specific college preparatory<br />

units outlined in the UNM Admissions Application.<br />

6. A list <strong>of</strong> honors, awards <strong>and</strong> distinctions; extracurricular<br />

activities; community <strong>and</strong> volunteer activities; significant<br />

health care experience; involvement in research, academic<br />

enrichment, or related employment.<br />

7. A 700- to 750-word typed, double-spaced personal<br />

statement, describing in the student’s own words his or<br />

her motives for a career in medicine; his or her interactions<br />

with diverse populations <strong>of</strong> individuals; <strong>and</strong> any life<br />

experiences that demonstrate a the student’s breadth <strong>of</strong><br />

cultural underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

Selection Process. After receiving the completed UNM <strong>and</strong><br />

BA/MD Supplemental application forms <strong>and</strong> transcripts, an<br />

admissions team will conduct a pre-screening <strong>of</strong> all applicants<br />

to select potential c<strong>and</strong>idates for the program. The<br />

admissions team will conduct interviews <strong>of</strong> the top c<strong>and</strong>idates<br />

in February <strong>and</strong> contact the finalists in mid March. Finalists<br />

will have until May 1 to submit their acceptance letters to the<br />

program <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

Annual Timeline:<br />

• December 1: Application Deadline; sixth semester transcripts<br />

due.<br />

• Mid January: Seventh semester transcripts due.<br />

• January 31: Completion <strong>of</strong> pre-screening <strong>and</strong> notification<br />

<strong>of</strong> c<strong>and</strong>idates.<br />

• February: Interviews.<br />

• Mid March: Final selection <strong>and</strong> notification <strong>of</strong> finalists.<br />

• May 1: Deadline for finalists to confirm acceptance.<br />

Continuous Eligibility. Students will meet at least once a<br />

year with the HMHV / BA/MD advisor to review their continuing<br />

eligibility status. Those who do not meet continuing eligibility<br />

requirements are subject to probation or disenrollment,<br />

as recommended by the Committee on Student Promotions<br />

<strong>and</strong> Evaluation. To remain in good st<strong>and</strong>ing in the undergraduate<br />

portion <strong>of</strong> the program, HMHV students must maintain<br />

the following st<strong>and</strong>ards:<br />

1. Maintain a 3.00 GPA on a 4.0 scale in their freshman<br />

year.<br />

2. Maintain a 3.50 GPA on a 4.0 scale in their sophomore,<br />

junior, <strong>and</strong> senior years.<br />

3. Maintain the enrollment status required to complete the<br />

undergraduate program in four years.<br />
