4. Of the <strong>Mathematics</strong> <strong>and</strong> Statistics courses taken, at<br />

least 27 hours must be numbered 300 or above.<br />

5. Completion <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> Concentrations I, II, III, IV or V<br />

below.<br />

6. The pass/fail (CR/NC) option may not be used in<br />

courses taken to satisfy requirements 1 <strong>and</strong> 4. All<br />

grades in these courses must be C (not C-) or better.<br />

Concentration I (Pure <strong>Mathematics</strong>). The concentration<br />

in Pure <strong>Mathematics</strong> requires MATH 322, 327, <strong>and</strong> 402 <strong>and</strong><br />

five <strong>of</strong> the following courses: 313, 319, 331, 421, 431, 434,<br />

441, 462, 472. Students who are unfamiliar with mathematical<br />

abstraction are encouraged to take 327 as early in their<br />

program as possible.<br />

Concentration II (Applied <strong>Mathematics</strong>). The concentration<br />

must include MATH 311 or 402, 312, 313, 316, 375. Both 311<br />

<strong>and</strong> 402 can be taken for credit. If 402 is not chosen, then<br />

the concentration must include one <strong>of</strong> 441, 462, 463, 464,<br />

466, 471 or 472. Students are strongly encouraged to take<br />

science <strong>and</strong> engineering courses with significant mathematical<br />

content.<br />

Concentration III (Math Education). Undergraduates seeking<br />

secondary certification in <strong>Mathematics</strong> may be enrolled<br />

in either the College <strong>of</strong> Arts <strong>and</strong> Sciences or the College <strong>of</strong><br />

Education. <strong>Mathematics</strong> major <strong>and</strong> minor requirements differ<br />

somewhat between the two colleges. The requirements for an<br />

A&S major are: MATH 321 (or 314), 305, 306, 338, STAT 345<br />

<strong>and</strong> at least 12 hours from MATH 307, 308, 309, 311, 317,<br />

319, 322, 331, 375, 401, 406 or other upper division courses<br />

approved by the math-education advisor.<br />

<strong>of</strong> the following: French, German, Russian.<br />

3. A student who would like to have a course <strong>of</strong>fered which<br />

is listed as <strong>of</strong>fered on dem<strong>and</strong> should discuss the possibility<br />

<strong>Mathematics</strong> Minor Study<br />

Requirements<br />

MATH 264 <strong>and</strong> 12 hours in <strong>Mathematics</strong> <strong>and</strong> Statistics<br />

courses numbered above 300. At least 6 <strong>of</strong> the 12 hours must<br />

be in courses labeled Math. (Note that a separate statistics<br />

minor is available.) The pass/fail (CR/NC) option may not<br />

be used for minor study <strong>and</strong> the grades in all mathematics<br />

<strong>and</strong> statistics courses must be C (not C-) or better. Courses<br />

required for a major may not be used to fulfill minor requirement.<br />

Minor in Statistics Requirements<br />

for <strong>Mathematics</strong> Major<br />

MATH 264 <strong>and</strong> STAT 145, 345, 427, 428, <strong>and</strong> an additional<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> Statistics in courses numbered 300 <strong>and</strong> above. All<br />

12 hours in courses 300 level <strong>and</strong> above must be in courses<br />

labeled STAT. (Note that a separate <strong>Mathematics</strong> Minor for<br />

Statistics majors is available). The pass/fail (CR/NC) option<br />

may not be used for minor study <strong>and</strong> the grades in all statistics<br />

courses must be a C (not C-) or better.<br />

ARTS AND<br />

SCIENCES<br />

Concentration IV (<strong>Mathematics</strong> <strong>of</strong> Computation). This<br />

concentration requires, along with the usual Math major<br />

requirements, the following:<br />

1. MATH 375, 464 <strong>and</strong> 471; four <strong>of</strong> 312, 316, 317, 318,<br />

319, 322; one <strong>of</strong> STAT 345, MATH 441. Note that MATH<br />

401 is not required for this concentration but is recommended<br />

for students contemplating advanced study in<br />

mathematics.<br />

2. A minor in Computer Science. Currently this includes 22<br />

CS hours <strong>of</strong> which the following are required: CS 152L,<br />

261, 251L, ECE 238L, CS 257L <strong>and</strong> two <strong>of</strong> CS 341L,<br />

351L <strong>and</strong> 361L.<br />

The CS advisor may make exceptions where appropriate.<br />

Concentration V (Distributed). In addition to the usual<br />

mathematics major requirements, this concentration requires<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> MATH 317 or 327 or STAT 345 <strong>and</strong> at least two<br />

<strong>of</strong> the following 10 groups <strong>of</strong> courses. Reasonable substitutions,<br />

approved by the student’s advisor, are allowed. The<br />

remainder <strong>of</strong> the required 27 credits at the 300 level <strong>and</strong><br />

above may be chosen by the student with the approval <strong>of</strong><br />

the advisor.<br />

1. 401 <strong>and</strong> 402 (Analysis)<br />

2. 322 <strong>and</strong> 421 (Algebra)<br />

3. 431 <strong>and</strong> either 331 or 434 (Topology/Geometry)<br />

4. 319 <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> 317, 318, 327 (Discrete <strong>Mathematics</strong>)<br />

5. Two <strong>of</strong> 312, 316, 462, 463, 466 (Differential Equations)<br />

6. 311 <strong>and</strong> 313 (Multivariate <strong>and</strong> Complex Calculus)<br />

7. 375 <strong>and</strong> either 464 or 471 (Computational<br />

<strong>Mathematics</strong>)<br />

8. STAT 345 <strong>and</strong> STAT 427 (Applied Statistics)<br />

9. 441 <strong>and</strong> STAT 453 (Statistics Theory, preparation for<br />

second actuarial exam)<br />

10. 472 <strong>and</strong> an approved course, possibly in another<br />

department, in image processing<br />

Additional information for <strong>Mathematics</strong> majors.<br />

1. Each <strong>Mathematics</strong> major should be in regular contact<br />

with their faculty advisor to discuss his or her program<br />

<strong>of</strong> studies.<br />

2. Since many graduate schools require a reading knowledge<br />

<strong>of</strong> one or two foreign languages, it is desirable that<br />

<strong>Department</strong>al Honors<br />

Requirements for departmental honors in <strong>Mathematics</strong> are<br />

1) a 3.5 GPA in <strong>Mathematics</strong> <strong>and</strong> Statistics courses <strong>and</strong> a 3.2<br />

overall GPA; 2) notification to department honors advisor no<br />

later than two full semesters prior to graduation; 3) completion<br />

<strong>of</strong> a project based on 6 credits <strong>of</strong> MATH 499 (project<br />

outline to be presented to the <strong>Mathematics</strong> Undergraduate<br />

Honors Committee [MUHC] for approval); 4) final written<br />

report to be submitted to MUHC for approval; <strong>and</strong> 5) seminar<br />

to be given at the end <strong>of</strong> the project. These requirements are<br />

in addition to the major requirements.<br />

M.S. in <strong>Mathematics</strong><br />

Concentrations: pure mathematics, applied mathematics.<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Science in <strong>Mathematics</strong> degree is <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />

the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Mathematics</strong> <strong>and</strong> Statistics in the concentration<br />

<strong>of</strong> pure mathematics <strong>and</strong> applied mathematics. The<br />

student planning to study pure mathematics is expected to<br />

have taken the courses usually included in an undergraduate<br />

mathematics major, that is, linear algebra, abstract algebra<br />

<strong>and</strong> advanced calculus. To pursue the program in applied<br />

mathematics the student should have taken advanced calculus,<br />

linear algebra <strong>and</strong> have some familiarity with differential<br />

equations <strong>and</strong> scientific computing. Promising students lacking<br />

an adequate undergraduate background may be admit-<br />
