ENGLISH 185<br />
Minor Study Requirements<br />
(18 hours)<br />
The English minor requires 18 hours <strong>of</strong> English courses numbered<br />
above 102. The minor program includes one survey<br />
course (294, 295, 296, 297), one course in Shakespeare<br />
(352, 353) <strong>and</strong> at least one 400-level course from the following<br />
list: 449, 450, 451, 452, 453, 454, 456, 457, 458, 459,<br />
460, 461, 462, 463, 470, 486; <strong>and</strong> 9 more hours with no more<br />
than 6 below 300.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Writing Minor (18 hours)<br />
Requirements are: 219 or 220 or 240; 290; 320, 416, 417,<br />
418, 419 or 420. Elective courses: 9 hours chosen from ENGL<br />
219, 220, 240, 320, 413, 414, 415, 416, 417, 418, 419, 420,<br />
441, 442, 443 or approved courses <strong>of</strong>fered in other departments.<br />
ENGL 499 (Internship, 1 hour) is optional. At least 9<br />
hours must be in courses numbered 300 <strong>and</strong> above.<br />
Minor in Period Studies (21 hours)<br />
A multidisciplinary program comprised <strong>of</strong> 21 hours: 12 hours<br />
in English courses numbered above 102 <strong>and</strong> 9 hours from at<br />
least two other disciplines. Each student’s program will focus<br />
on a particular historical period <strong>and</strong> be developed around<br />
the student’s individual interests after prior consultation with<br />
a minor advisor.<br />
Medieval Studies Minor (21 hours)<br />
A multidisciplinary program consisting <strong>of</strong> 21 hours <strong>of</strong><br />
approved courses. Each student’s program will be developed<br />
around the student’s individual interests after approval by<br />
an advisor. A brochure <strong>of</strong> requirements is available from the<br />
<strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> English <strong>and</strong> from the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> The Institute for<br />
Medieval Studies.<br />
The distribution <strong>of</strong> requirements is as follows: 3 hours <strong>of</strong><br />
English 315, the introductory course in Medieval Culture; 9<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> courses in Medieval English Literature (ENGL 211,<br />
315, 351, 411, 440, 448, 449, 450, 451); 9 hours from courses<br />
in Medieval Art (ARTH 262, 331, 404), Medieval History<br />
(HIST 303, 304, 305, 314, 320, 323, 326, 328, 386, 401,<br />
402, 411, 416), LATN 101, 102, 201, 202, 351, 352, GREK<br />
101, 102, 301, 302, ITAL 475, MUS 261, PHIL 308, RLST<br />
360, SPAN 301, 411). Interested students should contact the<br />
Director <strong>of</strong> The Medieval Studies Program in the <strong>Department</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> English.<br />
English as a Second Language<br />
Students who speak <strong>and</strong> write English as a Second Language<br />
may enroll in special sections <strong>of</strong> English 101 <strong>and</strong> 102<br />
designed for international students, recent immigrants, <strong>and</strong><br />
others who have limited experience with st<strong>and</strong>ard American<br />
English. For placement <strong>and</strong> scheduling, students should<br />
apply in person at the Rhetoric <strong>and</strong> Writing <strong>of</strong>fice in the<br />
English <strong>Department</strong>. ESL sections <strong>of</strong> English 101 <strong>and</strong> 102 are<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered for full credit (3 credit hours each). Non-credit English<br />
courses are <strong>of</strong>fered in the Center for English Language <strong>and</strong><br />
American Culture (CELAC) in Mesa Vista Hall. Programs <strong>and</strong><br />
courses in training to become an ESL teacher are <strong>of</strong>fered by<br />
the College <strong>of</strong> Education.<br />
<strong>Department</strong>al Honors<br />
Students who seek <strong>Department</strong>al Honors in English should<br />
apply to the Director <strong>of</strong> Undergraduate Studies no later<br />
than the last semester <strong>of</strong> their junior year. Admission to<br />
honors requires 1) an overall GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.2, based on at least<br />
75 hours <strong>of</strong> college credit, including a minimum <strong>of</strong> 9 hours<br />
<strong>of</strong> credit in English courses numbered 200 <strong>and</strong> above;<br />
2) a cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.5 in English courses numbered<br />
200 <strong>and</strong> above; <strong>and</strong> 3) a letter <strong>of</strong> recommendation from a<br />
regular faculty member from the <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> English.<br />
After being admitted to the program, honors c<strong>and</strong>idates must<br />
1) complete English 412 Capstone <strong>and</strong> Honors Seminar;<br />
2) enroll in English 497, Individual Study, in the semester<br />
before graduation in order to write a prospectus for submission<br />
to the Undergraduate Committee no later than<br />
the end <strong>of</strong> the tenth week <strong>of</strong> the semester; <strong>and</strong> finally,<br />
3) enroll in English 490, Senior Honors Thesis, to complete<br />
the Honors thesis for submission to the Undergraduate<br />
Committee no later than the end <strong>of</strong> the 12th week <strong>of</strong> the<br />
semester <strong>of</strong> graduation.<br />
The English <strong>Department</strong> also sponsors a chapter <strong>of</strong> Sigma<br />
Tau Delta, an international honors society for English majors.<br />
To be eligible for membership in Sigma Tau Delta applicants<br />
must 1) be an English major or minor who has completed<br />
three semesters <strong>of</strong> college work, including 6 hours <strong>of</strong> English<br />
courses beyond English 102; 2) have an overall GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.0;<br />
<strong>and</strong> 3) a cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.2 in all English courses. To<br />
apply for membership in Sigma Tau Delta, contact the faculty<br />
advisor <strong>of</strong> the chapter or the Undergraduate Director for an<br />
application.<br />
Graduate Degrees<br />
For University requirements for the M.A., M.F.A, <strong>and</strong> Ph.D.<br />
degrees consult the appropriate pages <strong>of</strong> this catalog. The<br />
following are general department requirements for English<br />
graduate programs. Consult the English <strong>Department</strong>’s<br />
Graduate Studies H<strong>and</strong>book <strong>and</strong> website for details about<br />
specific distribution requirements, examination procedures,<br />
foreign language requirements, <strong>and</strong> other regulations for all<br />
degree programs listed below.<br />
Application Deadline<br />
Fall semester: February 1<br />
A Bachelor’s Degree is required for all applicants to the<br />
Master’s Programs in English <strong>and</strong> to the M.F.A. in Creative<br />
Writing. A Master’s Degree in English or Comparative<br />
Literature is required for all applicants to the Ph.D. program.<br />
All applicants must provide full transcripts, a letter <strong>of</strong> intent, a<br />
writing sample, transcripts from all previously attended postsecondary<br />
institutions, GRE scores for the General Aptitude<br />
Test <strong>and</strong> the Advanced Subject Test in English Literature (for<br />
applicants to the MA in Language <strong>and</strong> Literature <strong>and</strong> to the<br />
Ph.D. program), <strong>and</strong> three letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation.<br />
Early application is recommended (all paperwork must be<br />
received on or before the listed deadline). Decisions on applications<br />
received by February 1 are announced by April 15.<br />
Teaching Assistantships<br />
Applicants must apply for a Teaching Assistantship by<br />
completing the T.A. Application form <strong>and</strong> including a critical,<br />
analytical writing sample for evaluation by the Director <strong>of</strong><br />
Rhetoric <strong>and</strong> Writing. The deadline for T.A. Applications is<br />
February 1.<br />
First year Teaching Assistants are required to enroll in English<br />
537, Teaching Composition, a practicum for teaching in the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> New Mexico’s writing program.<br />
Required Enrollment<br />
All graduate students in English must enroll for a minimum <strong>of</strong><br />
3 hours in English graduate courses per semester (excluding<br />
the summer session).<br />
Degrees Offered<br />
The <strong>Department</strong> <strong>of</strong> English <strong>of</strong>fers the Ph.D.; the M.F.A.<br />
in Creative Writing; <strong>and</strong> an M.A. with concentrations in<br />
